Got mine installed last week on the roof. It was done by a mexican so I assumed he helped build the house and knew what he was doing.

On the roof for sure. Make sure your HOA doesn't have any regulations about it being visible from the street.

HOA cant tell you where to put it. Until January 1, 1997, Homeowner Associations could prohibit a homeowner from putting a satellite dish on his roof. With passage of the Telecommunications Act of 1996, your local HOA is prohibited from enforcing local laws banning, or even delaying mounting of, a satellite dish that is less than 39 inches.
They can't even require you to request permission to put the dish on your roof! And once it's up, they can't make you take it down or even move it unless you have either created a safety hazard (which they have to prove to the FCC) or you live in a historic district (listed in the National Register of Historic Places).

I had crazy HOA nazi woman give me grief. Had them hire a lawyer and send me a couple threat of lawsuit letters. I sent the lawyer a letter with only "Please see (the citation to this law). Never heard from them again but the HOA nazi was not happy

would you let some random crackhead drill holes in your roof? no? if not then dont let some idiot installer from directv do it either.

This is the best advice you will get in this thread.

I actually just cut my DirecTV off yesterday and so far I don't miss it. We still get local channels through the RF cable, so we at least have that.

This. When I first moved into my neighborhood, this was the upcoming "hot topic" at the HOA meeting. They were going to start enforcing the "no dish rule" because they didn't like tacky satellite dishes. I sent the board president a copy of the law (he was a lawyer ironically enough), and he made some hissy fit comments at the meeting about how awful satellite dishes are but that unfortunately they couldn't ban them from the neighborhood.

I cut mine off the 7th of this month. I have a sign in for ESPN for football season, HBO, Netflix and will use a antenna to catch other games. Hasn't been bad so far.

On the roof.

1) I'd hate to cut grass around that thing
2) You're more prone to have obstructions the lower you get

It's takes 5 seconds at most to trim around it.
I had very good service, it only went out shortly 2-3 times in the 2 years I had it.

Mine is on the roof in a spot where you can't see it from any angle. The last time I had Directv come out to swap a bad dish they told me they weren't allowed to mount on roofs anymore due to safety issues. I told him I wasn't going to allow him to move it to the ground & I would cancel the service. He suddenly got approval to swap my dish on the roof.

And to the folks who bitch about losing signal when it rains, that's bullshite. You need to have your dish realigned if that's true. You WILL lose signal briefly during really bad storms, thats unavoidable. I was at my inlaws house in during Gustav & they kept their Directv signal up until the power went out when the eye of the storm was already over land approaching BR.

Had mine put on the roof. Never really inspected the work, trusted that everyone was ok. (MY MISTAKE)

About a year later we noticed a small leak in the game room. Upon further investigation a screw was missing from the brace of the dish. About $2500 in damage. Directv refused to fix due to the length of time that had passed.

If you choose roof, dont make the mistake that I did and check the installation.

Yea, the wife and I got to talking and we just determined that DirecTV for their pricing wasn't something that we NEEDED. She watches shows, but all of her shows pop up on Hulu Plus. I watch mostly sports, and I can stream all of those on the internet for free. Our son will watch anything but usually sticks to Netflix to watch How It's Made or Power Rangers. Our daughter is a year and a half and the only reason she has a TV in her room is so that we can use the built in CD player to play lullaby music when she sleeps.

Smart man. If they get a signal from the back of your house you can mount it into morter joints.
