I am replacing the A/c in my house, which was built in the 1950's, and not my forever home. I am going to have to add insulation in the attic and am thinking about redoing the ductwork also. This might be a dumb question so don't crucify me if it is. Should I remove the old insulation from the 50's and come back with a spray foam throughout the whole attic or just go back with fiberglass on top of the old insulation? Also, thoughts on ridge vents?

For your troubles!

Personally I would remove old insulation and go back with ridge vents and spray foam. Then have whoever changes out the AC also change out the ducts. This will be pricey but pay off in the long run.

If you use spray foam you don't need ridge vents.

Spray foam in order to work means incapsulated for sure in the attic. No ridge vents, no open inducted air, no venting in attic areas.
The only thing you will be doing by removing the normal insulation is making it easier for retro fitting anything.

Unless the insulation is infested with animal waste, there's really no point in removing it. It's loose fill I'm assuming? I would honestly just blow more insulation on top of the old.

Blow in on top of existing. Rather than spray foam, install radiant barrier on rafters. You'll get a drastic reduction in attic temp. for a fraction of the cost. Ridge Vents are great if you have the proper venting in your soffits or gable venting.

Have the original windows been updated to more efficient ones? If you got shitty old windows additional attic insulation may not help much.

If it's not your forever home don't bother with spray foam.

If it's loose fill insulation just fluff up the old stuff and add new on top. If it's batts then remove and replace.

If you are doing a new HVAC system do replace the ductwork.

Amen. there is nothing better than coming in sun burned off of the lake and laying down under a window unit.

Don't spray foam. leave original and add new to top.

I don't know why anyone who isn't getting paid to do it would remove the old insulation. Leave it, add more if needed and get on with your life saving up for the forever house.

Well you should learn more about what you're sometimes doing. You aren't supposed to vent the attic when using spray foam.

You can't do ridge vents if you're doing spray foam.

OP, it all depends on how much money you want to spend. Spray foam is legit but pretty expensive. I did a medical clinic in Denham that was foamed. I did an inspection in July and the temp in the attic was 81 degrees. Seriously cool stuff.

If you really want to replace insulation, I'd just do blown. It's what I got in my house and it's stupid easy to do.
