Wait so TX(for example) won't accept my PE (once I get it) bc I would have taken the test early?

My original email was in regards to this paragraph from the email they sent out:

quote:

If you ever apply for a professional engineer licensure in another state/jurisdiction you MAY be required to take the Principles and Practice of Engineering examination again. Some state/jurisdictions may not honor the “early taking” of the Principles and Practice of Engineering examination prior to obtaining the requisite progressive engineering experience.

Their response was this:

quote:

I cannot give you the names of the states; however, when I meet with my counterparts around the country, they mention their laws will not allow for the early taking of the PE. You may contact individual licensure boards if you care to do so. Here is link from the NCEES website with the contact info:

thanks a lot

If it's a widespread issue, that might make my decision easy

Yeah I was disappointed in their answer. I want to take it ASAP and get it over with. However, if I can not get reciprocity for other states it is not worth it.

Not sure if this has been addressed thus far in the thread but be careful doing this if you ever plan to work in a state other than LA.

I just took the PE Exam last year and this came up. One thing that was brought to my attention, if you move to a state that still enforces the 4 year rule, they may not recognize your license and they may require you to take it again in order to practice in their state.

Best of luck when you do take it though. It's pretty awesome to have that behind you.

A trend among states to allow early taking of the PE exam is accelerating. For many years, California has allowed candidates to take the PE exam in preparation for licensure after only two years of engineering experience. In recent years, Nevada, Arizona, and New Mexico have allowed candidates to take the PE exam after receiving a BS degree from an EAC-ABET accredited program, and having passed the FE exam. Now, in the past year, Illinois has instituted the same practice, allowing the early taking of the PE exam. In these states, the licensure candidate still needs to accumulate the requisite years of experience prior to being licensed.

Right on... There definitely isn't that many of us.

ETA What kind of work do you do? Just curious.

Mainly air quality work for a regional environmental consulting firm. Most of our clients are O&G related.

You?

I studied about 15 hours total for the civil PE but I had pretty good work experience

Test is not that hard if you know how to pace and strategize

Don't get overwhelmed

I wouldn't do test masters until you take it once maybe. TM is pretty expensive from what I recall

Yea I'm seeing that 300 hours is a rough average

300 hrs of studying for the PE? Whoa! I didn't come close to that. Knowing about how much I studied and if that is the "average", I would love to hear legitimate estimates on the high end. If you have to study that long for the Civil exam then your job isn't very related to CE.

I wish I could have taken it early, probably would have required a lot less studying.

We always hire qualified applicants. You have my e-mail if you want me to forward on an e-mail/resume to HR. Shreveport in particular is/has been looking though.
