Question about school bands these days, and LGBTQ+

Grew up both playing sports and in band. Smaller school, lots of kids did both. Earned a minor band scholarship at graduation that covered books and some other small expenses in college. That was more than 20 years ago. I have noticed that high school band seems to be getting worse these days. Smaller, less talented.

Anyway, some friends of mine have a kid going into 6th grade and they won't let him join the band because they say it's full of all the LGTBT+ and trans students. According to them, it's where those students go to associate with each other, and the school band now has a rep for being overly pro-LGTBQ+. Is that true and is that one of the reasons music programs in public schools are dwindling? Or are my friends making a hasty generalization because of one or two students in the arts? If true, I can't blame my friends really, but it's also disappointing. I believe music education is important.

My daughter is going in to 10th grade and is band, and while there are definitely freaks in the band that is not the norm in our area. Don't know about where you live though.

They are in a town right outside of OKC. It's definitely not the "norm" here either. Oklahoma is still by-and-large very conservative.

there might be more than in the general school pop. but who cares if there is LGBTQ+ in the band, they're not going to contaminate him/her.

does he/she enjoy it or not?

those nighttime band bus rides where people are napping or singing or laughing or just listening to music while the world passes you by are some great memories from my teenage years

Is that true

I thought that was the make up of every band. Just like the make up of every drama class. I think it's a great thing for comraderie for the kids who aren't in athletics or any other type of club.

I’m sure that this is a location issue. Can’t just throw that blanket over all “school bands”.

My kid's band might be an outlier, but the loudest voices I hear about in her band are America first types. I'm actually glad she has those influences in her life. So far, it's been good for her worldview.

Same. Where we grew up we all took Tonet (short Recorder) for half a year then had the option of picking an instrument to try band in the second half of 5th grade. Band was cool, so everyone was in it and the various feeder schools created a fantastic high school program.

I have no clue about the gay stuff...I graduated back in '88, so that was not an issue then. It's always been my experience that most bands don't flourish because kids aren't encouraged early on to participate in it, so by the time they see it it's considered uncool. No real solid youth programs so high school bands suck, which no one wants to be a part of.

Are they scared their kid will turn into a LGTBT+ person? You do realize its okay to be cool with people even if you don't really agree with how they live?

I don't know about whether it was ever cool, but HS bands in my day seemed like they were considerably bigger and a wider variety of students were in them.

They had boosters and sponsors and would take like 10 buses to games and such, it was honestly on par with the football programs in the area as far as money and support. Maybe it's still like that, but it seems smaller scale from distant observation.

my wife was in band, played the National Anthem solo, was a cheerleader, and was in the homecoming court all in one game.

a few athletes i ran with were in the band. this was in the 90s. i think it became a bit more of an outcast type group in the 00s. that's a generalization, not always the truth.

that being said, i have a friend that just pulled his kid out of band for the reason in the OP. moreso the kid wanted out after his freshman year.

This was most certainly the case at my suburban Houston high school in the mid 2000s. They were all liberals.

And based on interactions at reunions and social media posts, I would say greater than 80% of the band members from my graduating class are rabid leftists.

Liberals in the mid 2000s were a bit different. They were mostly very anti-war, pro-gay, anti-gun, and believed George Bush was behind 9/11. These days the same crowd would still be pro-gay and anti-gun but pro-war and pro-George Bush and criticize anyone who doubts the official 9/11 narrative.

I think band and the arts will always have more alphabet folks than metal shop or football, but less than the soccer or softball team.

We know families w/kids in the Mustang band and the Norman North band. Band does seem to attract socially awkwards kids but that's not a problem in my book. What you've described doesn't sound familiar to me, for whatever it's worth.

What a bizarre thread. “Are there too many gays in the band and might they infect my teenage kid?”. I feel bad for the kid both because he’s not allowed to make his own choices on extracurriculars and because he has such stupid parents

Band can always attract some of the kids that would normally be outcast, or seem socially awkward, but I don’t think it is a haven for LGBTQHXIDBE. Honestly, kids that are “about that life” usually form their own group on campus anyway. I could see how theater might be a place for those students to feel more at home.

I played sports because I thought it would make me popular with girls. While I was sweating on the field with a bunch of guys, the band nerds were spending their extracurricular time in an activity where girls were actually involved.

I was a dumbass.
