I purchased a gun online and they shipped it to a dealer. When I did my background Check , up to a 3 day hold was put on me. I have never been convicted of a crime, why would I have a hold?

It's the cooling off period so you don't buy a gun and shoot up a BLM protest in a fit of rage.

Or, you're secretly a terrorist.

Good question. Buying a gun has never taken more than 15 minutes for me.

You could be delayed for any reason under the sun. They have 3 business days to approve or deny so you probably going to have to wait 3 business days. Hopefully they clear you up quickly.

I bought one from Arms Merchant in Mandeville about 8 years ago and I had to wait 3 days. They ran a background check, which I assumed was standard. Is the 3-day hold not normal? I thought that was a law.

Was it your first time being background checked? Believe it or not, I just bought my first gun through a store this year at 31. (Have had guns passed down, given or bought off of friends) Never been arrested. I was put on three day hold as well, although it was about a week after the orlando shooting so that may or may not have had something to do with it.

If gun shops in LA are like they are in FL then I would have to assume the real answer is back log.

It's random, I've known people to purchase 3 guns and never get a hold and them bam they get a hold. As others have said I think it's more due to backlog or someone having a bad day and being a dick and giving people holds. I have never had a hold personally.

You may have the same name as someone with a felony.

This is the right answer FWIW. I am a FFL and know. This is why they ask for your Social Security Number to help with ID. I know a guy who can fill out a 4473, put his Social and get approved. Then five minutes later put all the same info on a new form except his social and get delayed.

Date of birth alone doesn't do it. They key on the SS Number for some reason.
