Is It because I'm old school or trashy that when I need to put an animal down I do it myself?

This was discussed in a long thread a few weeks ago. You're in the minority but there were quite a few other posters who said they prefer to do it themselves still.

Here's the recap.
1) Don't throw it over the fence.
2) Don't use any sort of shortarm because if you miss, you're certainly going to kill a child.
3) You should spend a lot of money at the vet to make sure the animal doesn't have two or three quality weeks left to live that you might deprive it of.

They dang sure don't do it free here. The local pit bulls will put a cat down for free though.
