I'm going this weekend last minute. Has anyone been before? Places to check out/eat?

Could you have picked a shittier spot in an otherwise amazing place?

That was a redundant question.

The answer is no. You could not have picked a shittier place in Costa Rica. You'll still have fun though.

Interesting, I may change my mind still. I just have a couple friends already going who rented a house on the beach there and invited me along.

I thought about going volcano Arenal instead, which seems like an awesome spot.

It's nice. No doubt. But on this short notice, hang out with your friends on the beach.

we loved puerto viejo. It was our favorite place in costa rica. And its got better weather in September when the rest of the country is getting rain. It gets less.

we rented a cabana on the beach, and cooked most of our meals. we did a bird watch tour that was pretty cool. We went snorkeling which was meh.

we did several vegetarian restaurants which were all really good.

Cauhita was gorgeous, but don't pay to snorkel there as you can do the same trip for free. Manzuinilla was a bit of dump but the main hike was pretty sweet with some stellar beaches.

We would go back in a second. But it was a pain in the arse to get to. We liked it better than the 2 other spots we went.

I went about 9 years ago. It is definitely a very small beach village, however it is ranked as one of the top 10 surfing spots in the world. Salsa Bravo is the break point, day we arrived they have 15 ft pipes.

There is not a lot to do there other than sit on the beach and drink. Also a small selection of restaurants, you will get used to eating Shrimp and Rice w/ Beans. Be careful with the water down there as well when drinking iced down beer. I tried to avoid the local water but the ice that melted in the cooler and on top of my beer cans caused Montezuma.

Also if it has been dry they will be on a water ration and only turn the water on once or twice a day.

Other than that is a beautiful place, but not blue water like the Pacific side.

I felt the same way until I realized that they hired a private car to and from the airport. Just drink and enjoy the scenery!

I arrive super early in the morning, is there anything going on in San Jose at 3am that's not likely to get me arrested??

Good Point I forgot to mention. Hire a private driver from San Jose to take you down to Puerto Viejo. It is a long drive and when we took the trip we spent more on drivers than we did lodging but it was worth it b/c we got pulled over by law enforcement trying to shake down tourist for cash and some of the smaller cities on the way are pretty shady.

Also on your way back to San Jose do the Rio Pacuare rafting trip, it was the best white water rafting I have ever done w/ Class 4, 4+ rapids.

Sounds like there's a horror/hilarious story behind that.
