If you and your spouse worked in Baton Rouge and you had to pick a public school option for your children would you move to Zachary, Central, Denham Springs, Prarieville, or give the EBR magnet system a shot?
We have a few years and private school is not completely out of the question but we are weighing the pros and cons of each option.

He's not in EBR. I'm pretty sure he's in China or something.

Since you have a few years EBR might be an option. It will be interesting to see what the new Superintendent can do for EBR. By his history, if positive change doesn't happen with him it might never happen for EBR.

Central is on the upswing as well as Ascension parish schools. I know of a couple of families that are getting out of Zachary for various reasons.

Find a good secular private school.

You can't teach this in school but a 15 year-old can "earn" this:

I work in EBR. We decided to live in the Dutchtown area but you can't really go wrong with St. Amant either. Both are great districts.

One child has gone from Dtown Primary-> Dtown Middle-> Dtown HS.

There are only a few really good public/magnet schools in EBR and they are difficult to get your child enrolled.

One serious advantage Ascension has over private schools is the choices for electives. My child will finish HS having three years of Computer Science courses as well as a Cisco CCNA class (hopefully he'll get his cert)

Ascension has a dual enrollment agreement with RPCC so students can earn up to like 18hrs of college credit starting their 9th grade year.

Well I'm pretty sure he can't change the demographics, so while he might make some improvements, I'm still budgeting for private school.

Education at Denham schools is decent. Your child's classmates at Denham Springs schools will be very different.

You'll rarely see this type of kid outside of Livingston Parish.

None of those schools offer what the catholic schools offer. And if you think they beat you over the head with religion at catholic schools, you clearly did not go to one.

But yeah, send your kid to Runnels so he can graduate with 30 people and be a weirdo.

How bad is the commute back and forth to BR? I fear its going to become just God awful in the next few years.

I went to Catholic schools from k-College but I'm no longer involved in the church. Not opposed to them but not really gung ho about it either.
