PSA: Possible FEMA or LA Shelter At Home Scams
Posted on 9/4/16 at 4:18 pm

I received a text message claiming to be from FEMA saying if I am staying at my damaged home reply 1.
I spoke with FEMA and they said that it was not them and that it may have been the LA Shelter at Home Program. FEMA texts come from the number 43342 (4FEMA). I just got off of the phone with the LASAH people and they said they absolutely did not send a text.
If you receive a text like this, DO NOT RESPOND as it is most likely a scam.
I'm sure most on here are smart enough to sniff out a scam, but I know everyone has family that would give out their SS# and date of birth if they thought it would help.

Yep. What number was the message from?

Well, that sucks. Definitely not legit. Stay aware. Sounds like somebody that shouldn't is trying to collect info on who is and isn't in their home.

if it's a scam I guess they're after finding out what houses are empty. Unless they're gonna send a follow up text later wanting info. Luckily I have a work phone not tied to my address.

I replied and got a follow up message from 82104 wanting to know how long I believe it will take to repair. Both messages said Message from FEMA: at the top. It is my work phone as well.

I haven't gotten a follow up yet. I guess we'll see.

shite, I got that from the same number.

I mean it's possible that I could be wrong. I don't work for FEMA or anything. But it says in very clear writing on the FEMA website.
Also, when I called FEMA they said it wasn't them that sent a text to me.

Did FEMA get hacked? I wonder how they have everyone's cell number. Did anyone not registered with FEMA get the text?
Posted on 9/4/16 at 5:45 pm to OysterPoBoy
Must have been either FEMA or LASAH. Is anyone signed up for both?
Posted on 9/4/16 at 5:47 pm to KamaCausey_LSU
I'm only registered with FEMA.

I received the same thing yesterday except by email. This is the reply address PHX-gwb@sendwordnow.com

Gotcha. Then yeah, FEMA must have been hacked in order for someone to get all of those phone numbers.
I mean it may be legitimate, but I highly doubt so. Especially since the follow up comes from a different number, at least in TigerRagAndrew's case.
If that doesn't look suspicious then I don't know what does.

Definitely suspect. I'll ignore from now on and see where it goes.

Alright, sorry for the false alarm. I had a scare since FEMA told me on the phone that it wasn't them.
