Going after a class action suit. I have Xfinity but use my own wireless modem, a Motorola SGB6580. Can they do this ( LINK) to mine? I ask because for the first time, I notice XFINITYWIFI as a wifi network last night. Curious if it is originating from my service or a neighbor.

quote:

A pair of Comcast customers has sued the company for turning Xfinity Internet routers into public Wi-Fi hotspots, saying Comcast’s actions pose risks to subscribers and are taken without seeking their authorization.
quote:

Plaintiff Toyer Grear and daughter Joycelyn Harris of Alameda County, California, filed the suit on December 4 (PDF) in US District Court in Northern California, seeking class action status on behalf of all Comcast customers who lease wireless routers that broadcast Xfinity Wi-Fi hotspots. “Without authorization to do so, Comcast uses the wireless routers it supplies to its customers to generate additional, public Wi-Fi networks for its own benefit,” the complaint states.

People are idiots. I actually enjoy the hell out of the public hotspots, and I really don't care if they are using my router to do it (they aren't).

I just swapped out an old modem and they gave me a new Cisco that I have to route, but my parents got a two-in-one the other day. When I set it up, there was the network name from the label on the modem/router, but I also saw some generic Xfinity wifi available and wondered what that meant.

We differ here because I did not allow them permission nor do I want them to use my equipment and electricity.
Another factor not considered in all this is the dramatic increase is EM field exposure that could occur in dense residential zones, (e.g. schools, condos, apt complexes). This has an effect on wireless signal congestion and potential unknown biological responses. Having done biological research with EMF or PEMF, I know they can be beneficial or harmful and should be kept to a minimum exposure level.
