This is my favorite "Boomer" gotcha. Boomers that used to have to work 100 hrs a week cannot comprehend how younger people can keep up with workload and not have to work weekends. So the solution is to A: Bitch at younger employees for "not putting in enough hours", or B: Double/triple the workload of said employees and expect them to work long hours to keep up. So the result is you have a young guy that is capable of using technology as a tool to do twice the work as his predecessors, but for employers that expect to pay them the same rate as their predecessors, and use the excuse that we "aren't dedicated/don't have any drive" to avoid doing so.

The first office job I had, in the 90's, we could smoke in our cubes/offices up until about 1998. RJR was our biggest client though.

That was less than 20 years ago... hard to fathom now.

The men sexually harassed the female secretaries... and the secretaries pretended to enjoy it so they wouldn't be fired.

The traditional 40 hour work week needs to be the next thing to become extinct. There are some direct service type jobs in our office that still actually require them, but for a lot of the folks, its a waste of 10 hours of being alive per week.

During down time, slow days, etc., what did office types do all day at work to pass the time?

I imagined they probably coked and joked in other ways, but otherwise worked about 80% of the time instead of the average probably 30% now. But I supposed technological advances have made us considerably more efficient in office environments, so maybe it balances out.
