Background: in mid 30s, married with no kids (but trying) and live in Nola. I have a (on paper) good job I recently started, but don't particularly like it. I've lived in Nola all my life and frankly, just feel like its the time for a change.

Have been to Chicago and know folks that live there. Loved the city and it also offers more job opportunities. My wife could keep her job and telecommute.

Any posters done this or lived in both cities and have any advice?

Pics of the wife would be helpful to ascertain advice.

Additionally, if appropriate, stud services may be available.

Probably the right time of year to make the move.

Winter is coming.

Chicago is an awesome city, but very pricey. Make sure the pay will be worth the relocation.

Have fun freezing your arse off for 6 months of the year. I will never understand the allure of Chicago. New York and Boston are so much better.

Watch for falling ice in the downtown area. Seriously.

I hear the last week of July and the first week of August are spectacular, though.

Great city, but I hope you are getting a substantial pay raise.

I should make it clear I would be searching for new employment if I did this-not transferring.

Other cities up for discussion are Austin and Denver

I just relocated in April. Got referred for a job, they relocated me and my wife. I live in the southwest suburbs. The city is awesome. The suburbs are not as great as the Philly burbs that I moved from.....what do you want to know???

Chicago is ridiculously expensive and freezing cold. Are you prepared for that?

Mainly for cost of living. From my research I know it's higher in Chicago than Nola obviously. However, some have told us that given the rapidly increasing rental costs in Nola that it's not as far off as one would think.

Taxes are the killer...look at between 5k and 10k a year in property tax...property is probably about the same...everything else is probably close

I'm a south LA native, been living in Chicago for about 2 years. I love it here. I find it hilarious when louisiana folks rip on the long Chicago winter when they have the most insufferable and unending summers. I'll take a shitty winter over a shitty summer any day.

I live in a neighborhood just north of downtown with a lot of late 20s/early 30s folks, and a lot of people have young children. Yall would probably like it as well. Would love to chat more and help you out- shoot me an email, foreverlsugirl@gmail.com.

I can answer any questions you'd like. I haven't lived in New Orleans, but I've visited a handful of times.
