I'll add/supplement that women will on some level behave like children all their lives. The biological impulses that protect the ticking timeclock that is their uterus will hard-wire their brain to be selfish, self-interested. Sometimes they don't even know they are doing it. There is no use vilifying it; it's not their fault. Just understand that it is a part of what makes women different and plan accordingly for naive, self-serving behavior.
Also, it always helps if she thinks she loves you/needs you just a little bit more than you need her. That really goes along with the "be a man" point. That is why treating a girl like a dick works in the short run. To make something work long-term, you have to give her what she needs, not what she says she wants. Women say they want a man who does 1,2,3....infinity, but that isn't what their actions SHOW that they want. They may say they want an equal democracy, but what they really want is for you to be a benevolent dictator. You don't have to be a dick, you just have to display a lot of backbone. You can pleasantly but firmly tell her what is up.

Always remember that a woman never truly loves you. She only loves the way you make her feel. If your situation changes she can and will leave you with zero remorse. And will find something you did to justify her actions in her own mind.

2. Feeling special
3. Money, see number 1
4. Having more than other women (competition), see number 3.
