This and most of the other pics posted would be great "getaway" spots, but I don't know if I could live somewhere that is far removed from civilization.

OPs picture looks just like my buddies cabin near Durango CO... I mean I'm trying to see how it's not his cabin. Animas river looks the same, same fireplace and deck... Crazy

This may be out in the middle of nowhere, but I'm not sure. However, there are places out west were this kind of scenery exists just outside of a good-sized town. That's my ideal spot... Somewhere beautiful and relatively secluded, but within a short drive of shopping/theater/etc., and within a couple of hours of a major aiport/city.

I think I'll eventually be somewhere in Oregon or Washington...

Actually, the cabin is about 45 minutes from Redmond/Bend, OR. For me, that's acceptable.

28 miles to the grocery store here.

You get used to it.

Palace of Versailles, but the Petit Trianon would work. Tech challenged, can't post pics.

Yep, while I've never lived that far from a grocery store, I've lived where going to and from the store took the better part of an hour. I did get used to it, planned my trips a little better.

It's hard to know how far that is from "civilization." I get this point for the people posting those S. Pacific Islands stilt house photos, though. I'd get stir crazy as shite after about a month. However, I'd love a cabin in the woods within 30 minutes or so of legitimate civilization.

I wouldn't want to live in Vacherie or Donaldsonville, even in a nice big old house.

Not surprised. Oregon is really the place I was thinking about when describing my ideal location. That cabin is a little farther out from a major city than I was describing, but Bend is big enough for plenty of people. I think I'd like to be just a little bit closer to a major airport.

There are plenty of places closer to Portland that fit the bill for me. My wife and I have been talking about a move recently, and Oregon and Washington are both on the "wife approved" list.
