And according to the U.S. Census Bureau, Urania is the poorest town, not only in the state but in America. Urania's median annual income is only $12,358 and the poverty rate is 40.4%. The state's economy heavily relies on industries such as energy, tourism, and agriculture, which can be subject to volatility.2

UrAnus, La is 2nd

It's central LA. Almost exactly in the middle between West Monroe and Alexandria.

ETA: LaSalle parish.

According to Wikipedia, Urania had an 87% increase in population between 2000 and 2010. Then a 47% decrease between 2010 and 2020.

There is nothing in Urania. Everyone lives in Olla.

Time Magazine once named Lake Providence, LA the poorest town in America. Think that was in the 90s.

There is neither tourism nor agriculture in Urania, unless you count pine trees. There is, however, a hospital and a wood pellet plant. They’re probably not in the “city” limits though. That’s probably what keeps the numbers low.

If it’s poorer than the delta town of Jonestown, MS… I would be blown away. I drove through there once taking a shortcut. I’ll not do it again.

Urania is not a state. Jena, Urania, Tullos, and Olla (my guess) is logging country.
