Jacksonville, NC -- Police in Jacksonville shot and killed an alligator they said ate an 80-pound dog Tuesday night.
WNCT reported the Husky was eaten around the intersection of River Street and Henderson Drive.
NC Wildlife officials found the dog's remains inside the alligator.
City officials said a woman was walking the dog at dusk Tuesday when it ran to the edge of the water near a local shopping center. The woman was not injured.
Alligators usually feed around dusk.
Public safety and NC Wildlife Resources Commission officers searched for the alligator Wednesday morning. Department of Public Safety spokeswoman Beth Purcell said after discussions about capturing and relocating the alligator, officials decided that in the interest of public safety, the alligator had to be killed.
The alligator was found near the Brooks Gruber Bridge. A public safety officer shot the alligator, which disappeared below the surface of the water. Authorities recovered the body after it resurfaced.
Officials want the alligator's body to be put on display.
Authorities warn community members to avoid feeding wild animals, including ducks, because the alligators feed on them.
Police kill gator after it ate an 80lb Husky that was being walked by its owner
Probably shot it in the stomach to make sure the dog was dead, amirite?
They most likely just wanted to shoot the dog. It just so happened to be in the gator at the time.
Let me tell you what now. I'd call a coupla hard, pipe-hittin' *******, who'd go to work on the homes here with a pair of pliers and a blow torch. You hear me talkin', alligator boy? I ain't through with you by a damn sight. I'ma get medieval on your ass.
