If you spent your weekend wandering around capturing cartoon monsters on your phone, you're likely one of millions addicted to Pokémon Go, the latest mobile game sensation. But if you played the game on an iPhone and signed in with your Google account, you also just handed the keys to your entire Google account to Niantic, the developer behind the game. As pointed out by Adam Reeve, a principal architect at Red Owl analytics, nothing in the sign up process indicates that you're giving the app full access to your account.
Indeed, according to the Google help page, this means that the application will now be able to "see and modify nearly all information in your Google account." That means that Niantic -- and, more importantly, anyone who has access to Niantic's servers -- will be able to read and access all your email, your Google drive docs, your search history, your private Google Photos and a lot more.

So does this mean any website or app that you use your Google ID for can do the same? It seems like that is an option on various apps.

Gross. I downloaded it yesterday to see what it was about, and deleted when I got to the Google log in screen. Google already knows everything about me, so it felt weird.

Well, whoever ends up with my personal data is gonna be in for one hell of a surprise. And joke's on them because I don't play takesies-backsies.

Google has been doing this for years.

Just about every app you download I am willing to bet can access everything.

Damn, looks like people get to read how shitty I am at saving money through Mint.

Yeah, if you have any expectation of privacy while using apps, you're dumb. Reminds me when FB changed their privacy policy and freaked everyone out.

So, they have been getting mine for years through ingress. It's fun and that data isn't worth anything to me.
