Hi res pictures are arriving.

This will be my last update to the thread. Many good sources of info around the web.

Charon:

Ice mountains on Pluto:

Best picture yet!

from 7/12:

Almost there!

quote:

Mission scientists have found Pluto to be 1,473 miles (2,370 kilometers) in diameter, somewhat larger than many prior estimates. Images acquired with the Long Range Reconnaissance Imager (LORRI) were used to make this determination. This result confirms what was already suspected: Pluto is larger than all other known solar system objects beyond the orbit of Neptune.

“The size of Pluto has been debated since its discovery in 1930. We are excited to finally lay this question to rest,” said mission scientist Bill McKinnon, Washington University, St. Louis.

This might be the best image we ever get of this side of Pluto, since it will be turned away from the New Horizons probe when it achieves closest approach...

It disappoints me how little attention this has been getting. Sure I've seen it mentioned here and there but people should be more excited about this than they are.

It's unfortunate that science has not been as important to the general public. We need more NDT and Bill Nye.

Amazing stuff, I can't wait to see what comes back in the next few days.

Does than image remind anyone else of George Melies's "Les Voyage dans la Lune"? All it needs is an angry face and a bullet sticking out of its eye.

Incredible - thanks for sharing weagle.

Nobody knows or really cares about this. Sad.

How far away is that? Why can't we get clearer pictures? They should've launch the Hubble Telescope.

Stoked. The little we've seen and know about Pluto makes this a great add to our exploratory resume.. Well done humans

Because for the first time in human history we are getting pictures of the most distant "planet" in our solar system. It's an incredible milestone for mankind and people just don't seem to care.

Pluto is officially no longer a planet. Correct?

That is correct. It is a dwarf planet and I believe the largest known Kuiper Belt object.

Took me a second to notice the arrows. It is amazing that only 85 years after this, there will be a machine sending back pictures from within 8,000 miles.

Pluto's orbit is 248 years. We have only known about it for a portion of that time.

Consider this: Pluto hasn't completed an orbit during the entire time the United States has been in existence.

I read somewhere that the size of Pluto is the distance from Baltimore to Houston.

It ain't very big.

Pluto and Charon (largest moon) would just about cover a majority of the continental US. Both are smaller than the Moon.

Factoids like this are why we need Bill Nye back on tv.
