Plumbing Board - kitchen sink "leaks"

I've been in this house almost two years and I've had something occur twice now (second time was tonight). We have a double sink in the kitchen with a disposal on one side.
Wife (no pics) is washing dishes. Apparently she does not realize water is quickly filling up not only on the side with the disposal, but water is coming up out of the drain on the other side. Then, we hear water leaking, so I open the cabinet to find water coming out of the pipe at the connection points (the washers) on both ends of the piece of pipe that connects the non-disposal drain to the main drain pipe. The disposal is clearly 100 percent clogged and water is now backing up through that leaking pipe.
I immediately run the disposal, it clears the clog, sucks all the water down, including through the side sink pipe, and the leak ends. Can run the water for 20 minutes straight, and as no water is piling up, no water leaks.
It seems to me that the water leaks because as it backs up it finds any weak spot. But it also seems to me that this should not occur. The washers seem to be super tight. Hand tight and then a half-turn with the pipe wrench - what my old man always taught me.
Any thoughts on how to fix this?

Should have married someone with at least half a brain

Either your wife is shaving her pubic hairs in the sink.
Or stuffing her boyfriend's jizz rags down there.

Could be Jodi's used condoms, WC.

Tough crowd......Funny but tough......Tighten the nuts on the joints a quarter turn and see if that helps. If not, completely loosen the joint nuts , shoot some silicone caulk on the threads and re-tighten.......Oh wait.....I didn't ask if you had nuts.

Is she putting noodles down the disposal?

My guess is anything and everything food related is headed into that sucker.

Wasn't sure if it was safe to use silicone caulk. I can definetly do that.

Make sure gaskets aren't cut or damaged, and go to a plumbing store and purchase better ones than those cheap white ones.....

OP, There's a shitty Texas board with a funny wives and the shite they do thread..
It's about 600 pages and worth the read. I was TaskingMonkey until the clique down voted me to a ban. frick 'em all with rusty rebar.

Instruct your wife to stop shoving anything and everything down the disposal.
Tell her to walk her lazy arse to the trash can and scrape left over food items in there before cleaning dishes.

Take apart the fittings. Clean them with some vinegar, rub a little Vaseline on them and put them back together. I put the drain fittings under my sink hand tight. Never had an issue with them leaking.

yeah with the cheap plastic drain pipes the tighter you go the more it leaks.

This is your problem. Take off the garbage disposal and stop putting food down your sink. The pipe under your sink is only 1 1/4" or 1 1/2". It isn't big enough to flush out chunks of food. The pipe that flushes your big turds are either 3" or 4".

I'd suggest replacing the pipes under there. Gaskets/seals and flanges will develop small gaps over time. The pipe system under there is cheap to replace. I would guess under $30 total.

Also this is not needed, you probably stripped or broke the threads. Go buy a new sink kit, and just hand tighten.

You do understand how a garbage disposal works, don't you?
