Woman arrested after New Year’s Day wreck leaves one dead, others injured in Livingston Parish

quote:

Livingston Parish, La. (BRPROUD) — An Independence woman has been arrested after a wreck killed a Baton Rouge woman and injured others around 5 p.m. Monday, Jan. 1.

According to a news release from Louisiana State Police Troop A, troopers were called to a crash involving multiple vehicles on Interstate 12, near LA 44. April Schaff, 44, of Baton Rouge, was killed as a result of the collision, and several other people were treated for minor and moderate injuries.

Ashely Arnone, 24, of Independence, was arrested and charged with vehicular homicide, reckless operation four counts of negligent injuring. She was booked into the Livingston Parish Detention Center.

quote:

According to LSP, the investigation showed that Arnone was driving west on I12 in a 2021 Hyundai Palisade.
quote:

According to the news release, “a 2023 Volkswagen Atlas was slowing to stop in the left lane behind a 2023 RAM that was stopped due to a prior crash.” The Palisade hit the Atlas from behind, causing it to hit the RAM and move into the median. At that point, the Palisade also hit the RAM from behind.

Then a 2017 Honda Accord that was behind the Palisade hit it and the Atlas.
quote:

LSP said Arnone was wearing a a seatbelt and was treated at a hospital for minor injuries.

The driver of the Atlas and rear passengers were all wearing seatbelts and sustained moderate injures that required treatment at a local hospital. The front passneger also was wearing her seatbelt, but she died at the scence from her injuries.

The driver of the RAM also was treated at the hospital for minor injuries, and the Accord driver was uninjured.

LSP said impairment is not suspected, but the crash remains under investigation, and a toxicology sample was taken.

No DWI, but still pending toxicology. So, either dicking with a cell phone or excessive speed? Both?

It’s I12 so both. The number of people exceeding the speed limit by 20+ and tailgating inches off the bumper of the car in front of them while on their phone is frightening.

I would guess it is about 60% and the State Troopers don't do a damn thing about it.

Good thing they don’t give out speeding tickets anymore and just let hood rats and trashy sorority girls drive 100 MPH while they stare at their phones

I suggest you contact your state rep and senator. Rather than have state troopers patrol the interstates and try and make them safer, the state sends the troopers to New Orleans.
Troopers are needed on the interstates now!!

Terribly tragic for this family starting the new year. Prayers for the surviving children and father who have their own injuries and recovery ahead.

I would say 100% chance she was staring at her fricking phone.

I commute Mandeville to Slidell every day for work. Conservatively, 60-70% of people I see are staring at their phone.

Incredibly sad. I wonder why they charged her with vehicular homicide if impairment is not suspected.

She was truly a wonderful person and her husband and children are also great people. Such an unimaginable loss…

Tell the people you love that you love them, there are no guarantees in this life.

They have a gofundme set up for them, but I can't link it on here. Against the rules.

With heavy hearts, we come to you seeking support for the Schaff Family, who recently faced a life-altering tragedy. On Monday, January 1, 2024, their lives were shattered when they were involved in a devastating wreck that took the life of their beloved mother, April. This heart-wrenching incident has left Louis, a grieving husband, and their three children, Evie, Lily, and Louis Jr., all hospitalized with a very long road to recovery.

The family is burdened not only by the grief of losing April but also by the mounting costs of medical bills, funeral expenses, and the essential needs of daily life. Louis will be out of work for an unknown amount of time due to his injuries.

This GoFundMe campaign is dedicated to helping the Schaff Family overcome the financial and emotional challenges they now face. Your generous contributions will directly assist with covering funeral costs, medical bills, and general living expenses as they adjust to this heartbreaking new reality.

The road to healing will be a long one, but with your kindness and generosity, we can help the Schaff Family rebuild their lives after the tragic loss of April, supporting them as Louis and all three children face the challenges of recovery in the hospital. Thank you for being a source of compassion during this profoundly difficult time.

Speculating here but they can probably tell if she wasn't slowing down or when she started slowing down with not enough time to stop, based on her speed at impact, and figured out she was distracted? This can happen so quickly, especially going so fast. I'm not gonna pretend I haven't had some close calls, like guardian angel moments, have you ever had to slam on your brakes? Praying for everyone involved.

I was told the 24 year old that hit them was traveling really fast in some sort of chase with her husband or ex. Not sure though.

Because we didn't get the whole story. That charge requires impairment.

Terrible accident and loss of life. Prayers for the family.
Frightening how many also think the left lane is to drive 20-30 mph over the speed limit as a passing lane.

I went to Grammar school with her husband, Louis, who was also in the car. Unimaginable tragedy all 3 kids, and he are still in the ICU.

I drive to BR from Hammond and back every day. I couldn’t tell you the last time I saw any kind of cop on 12 for 90% of the drive time. They post up near O’Neal looking for illegals I guess because people fly by them without a care.

no LPSO, no walker cops, no BRPD, no state police. People do whatever the frick they want on 12 and it’s gotten so dangerous I’m surprised when I make it thru in one piece

I can't remember the last time I was on 12 and a challenger/charger didn't fly by me going 100 and weaving between lanes
