Do police get worker's comp if they're injured on duty?

Only 66% of what his salary is and I am sure it wasn't much to begin with.

but if he worked a lot of extra duty or something, does that get covered?

Nope. Only gets a portion of his salary and that is it.

Because if not then that's a damn disgrace.

Sure is.

I don't understand why the mother would have to completely stay home from work to take care of him? Not trying to be negative, just genuinely curious.

Most lawyers don't even know that sheriff's deputies are the only employees in Louisiana not required to be covered by our workman's comp laws . The legislature should be ashamed to let the Sheriff's Association get away with that. They pay med bills under health policy . They pay full wages 6 months then half wages 6 months then s. o. l. See Gorton v Ouachita Police Jury. Deputies have no idea they are the least protected workers in Louisiana. Past time for the legislature to correct that travesty.

LA Sheriffs Association, of which our Sheriff is the President, has mucho power in the Legislature and the laws are exactly how they want them.

Deputies should ask their legislators why city police, campus police, state police and every other employee in La. except sheriff's deputies are required to be included under our workmans comp laws.

I'm not sure how I feel about this.

Think about your own insurance in case you were shot or in a near-fatal auto accident.

Would they cover all you medical/living expenses?

Ask family/friends who have been thru this how they got thru it financially.

quote:

A recent Harvard University study showed that medical expenses account for approximately 62 percent of personal bankruptcies in the US. Interestingly, the study also showed that 72 percent of those who filed for bankruptcy due to medical expenses had some type of health insurance, thus debunking the myth that only the uninsured face financial catastrophes due to medical-related expenses.

From what I have read Simmons now has a titanium rod in his left arm after the bone from his elbow to his shoulder was shattered. He will also require many more surgeries not to mention extensive physical therapy. I would imagine he may also need some counseling to deal with what has happened. It would not be surprising if he has PTSD.

So someone has to be there for him to drive him to those appointments and to be there to hear what the doctor says. He will need help doing a lot of things. He will likely be unable to help much around the house so now the wife has to do all of that. So working full-time right now may be difficult for her. That's just the physical aspect of his recovery.

As for his mental recovery, I think that having his wife there by his side is important to him and to his recovery. So I have no problem with her taking off work to devote her time to supporting her husband.
