Have a large group of adults and kids heading there this Summer. Any recs on excursions? I know we're going to see the ruins but not sure what else. Looking for some good hiking or snorkeling outings that kids can handle. tia

Tulum is a good one that isn't far away. The beach there is surrounded by a reef and looks awesome. I also did some snorkeling in Cenotes and it was a fun time.

Tulum you must get there! An absolute must. You will regret it if you don't go.

Given the location Tulum is a good choice without traveling a long distance.

Mee two.

It's not Chichén Itzá.

But the setting is wonderful.

Notes from a 1986 visit.

There is a small zoo between Cancun and Playa that is excellent. It isn't cheap, but you have a tour guide and you are interacting and holding a majority of the animals

best zoo ever. we got to walk in the large pit of crocodiles. no walls or nets. just a guy with a stick guiding you through 100 crocs. was awesome. a must go with kids for sure.

Was just there a few months ago and talked to several locals, they state the Cartels have become increasingly active in the area so be aware. For the most part, they have left the tourists alone and haven't gone near any of the resorts. Also, my chipped debit card got scanned at the airport (I didn't use it, it was in my pocket) and they were charging on my account by the time my flight landed.

Not saying not to go, I will be back later this year, just saying to be conscious of the situation.

I believe the credit card story - my friends down there, locals also, haven't brought up any concerns over cartel activity so hopefully that is overblown or rumors.

The best excision in the region in my opinion is the Signature Tour by Local Quickies. The name of the tour operator is a little odd but it's highly rated and all of my clients that have gone on this tour have raved about it.

That's bad arse. We've been to Isla Mujeres a few times without kids but I would try to catch that if we went with the kids.

Local Quickies is excellent. Everyone I have recommended has thanked me after. My kids loved the staff and it was the highlight of our vacation.

Check out Robinson Crusoe tour in Akumal. 30 ft catamaran goes down coast to Chemuyil Bay. Snorkel swim and cooked lunch on the beach. Unlimited beer and and soft drinks. $100/person and goes out of AkumAl Dive Shop.

Rent a car or three depending on how many people your group is. It's like $20/day for a 4-door standard, and you could probably get them down on that if you're getting several. Swing by a store and pick up beer. Head north a half hour to Puerto Morelos. Hang out on a clean, friendly beach and eat ceviche prepared off the boats.

Playa del Carmen is a tourist town, and Cozumel is like PdC, only an island. Tulum is awesome if you can catch it when it's not crowded, otherwise good luck finding a spot on the beach there. There are also a hundred different cenotes off the main highway outside of PdC where you can chill away from the crowds.
