Plasma rocket could get us to Mars in 39 days

This company is south of Houston in Webster. I didn't like to hear NASA's funding being cut. Hopefully the private space exploration sector will make strides on its own.

But Ad Astra has bigger plans for VASIMR, such as high-speed missions to Mars. A 10- to 20-megawatt VASIMR engine could propel human missions to Mars in just 39 days, whereas conventional rockets would take six months or more.

What about the ride back? I seem to remember one of the problems with getting to Mars, would they would have to wait a year and a half for the Earth and Mars to get however close to each other again before they could get back

Or I just made that up, I'm not sure.

i was flipping through channels and saw a program (given it was on fox news) that was talking about how much further with far less capital the private sector can do things.

it talking about the technology the gubment had in place to clean oil spills had not changed in the 20 something years between the Exxon Valdez and the BP spill. And that some private corp had a contest to develop a more efficient way to clean oil spills. Last place nearly doubled the standards the government has in place. the first place team quadrupled it. and more than half the teams had no prior experience in the oil industry.

Wouldn't worry about getting back. The first missions would be sure death missions. Just make sure you get there and get the data transmitted back to Earth. An Ultimate sacrifice.

re: Plasma rocket could get us to Mars in 39 days
quote:

The technology uses radio waves to heat gases such as hydrogen, argon, and neon, creating hot plasma. Magnetic fields force the charged plasma out the back of the engine, producing thrust in the opposite direction. Due to the high velocity that this method achieves, less fuel is required than in conventional engines. In addition, VASIMR has no physical electrodes in contact with the plasma, prolonging the engine's lifetime and enabling a higher power density than in other designs.

quote:

ISS boosts are currently provided by spacecraft with conventional thrusters, which consume about 7.5 tonnes of propellant per year. By cutting this amount down to 0.3 tonnes, Chang-Diaz estimates that VASIMR could save NASA millions of dollars per year.

Sounds legit to me

I have actually thought that NASA should become more of a regulatory industry if the future of space travel is headed to the private sector. Regulating space flights/missions (think FAA for space), gathering proposals for U.S. missions, setting safety standards, etc. could be where NASA needs to move to. This would still provide an avenue for increased funding to further explore space and to boost private sector innovation.

The government is trying to do away with what's called "Cost & Reimbursement" contracts... those are the ones where a contractor essentially keeps all invoices and then gives them to the government to be reimbursed... those are the contracts that have the $20 hammers and $5 nails. But "Firm-Fixed Price" is a whole different story... that's when the government gets away with murder in full-and-open competition.

didnt read the article, but could the rocket be so fast that humans would not be able to survive the trip?

Speed has nothing to do with whether we survive or not. It's all about acceleration and G's.
