Accidentally posted in money board, meant to post here..we know the O-T gives the best advice..

I recently took a job with LSU, one of the benefits is free tuition for 6 hours a semester.
I definitely want to take advantage of this but I'm confused about what I want to do.
I have a graduate degree already (public administration)..would hopefully like to stay at LSU for years to come, but never know what the future holds. Have debated a move to NOLA.
Don't have any undergraduate business courses, some graduate econ and finance..but I have noticed a lot of jobs at LSU that are available only to those who have 24 hours of accounting classes. I have only taken ACCT 2001..managed a C. (but that was with 12 hours of graduate courses along with it, all of which I received A's in). I did not enjoy accounting, but I've heard it gets better after the first course, and I would just do 1 course per semester.
What should I pursue? PhD in higher ed admin or take 7 more accounting courses so I can be eligible for more business-oriented jobs?
GRE and GPA are good enough to get in PhD program, but it would take about 5 years to finish. To finish accounting courses would take about 3 and 1/2 years, but I could stop and start those if I needed a break, whereas the PhD requires continuous enrollment. (but I've heard you can take "dissertation research" hours if you need to, just to stay enrolled?)

If it matters, not married, no kids..but hope to be married in about 2 years, and have a child in 4 or 5...I do work 8-4:30 but LSU is very generous with vacation time, so I anticipate having plenty of time off. Can also take 3 hours off per week (without using leave) to go to class..but the PhD courses are during the evening so I wouldn't need to with that.

thanks in advance.

What a wonderful option!

Can you do both? I would take advantage of all the free education possible.

It wasn't mentioned, so just a heads up, you have to work on campus for a year to be eligible for tuition exemption.

PhD now while it is "Free." You could always take accounting classes through an online program later.

Also, time permitting could you not do a little of both? For example, my doctoral program actually requires a minor from another department.

That's a good point about doing accounting later. Would be easier to do that at any point on down the road. This doctoral program doesn't require a minor or anything, but it may be possible to work accounting classes in. I know higher ed admin doesn't have many course offerings in the summer, so maybe then.
Thanks for the ideas.
