[quote]Let’s rechristen Lee Circle as Allen Toussaint Circle, with an appropriate memorial.

There isn’t a more fitting individual or a less divisive solution to the “monument issue.” Few New Orleanians have contributed so much to the city, the nation and the world – advancing our culture, creating amazing music with such a huge diversity of artists. As Jazz Fest’s Quint Davis said, “he was a one-man Motown.”

Only Louis Armstrong could approach his stature, and of course he has a park named in his honor.

At this time of great sorrow for all lovers of New Orleans music and culture, such a move would unite us in a way we have not seen since the events of 10 years ago.[quote] LINK

seems right

At least this isn't a knee-jerk decision

I mean, if they're going to rename it, thats a hell of an option.

Toussaint Circle even sounds cool.

Name it after Cowboy Mouth - have the statue replaced with a giant speaker that plays Jenny Says 5,324,904,190 times a day.

I would rather not see it renamed, but Toussant Circle would be a great and fitting name if such a renaming ever came to pass.

I would rename it Higgins Circle since it's right next to the World War II Museum. We would never have won the war without New Orleans's own Higgins Boat.

I agree. Not in favor of changing it, but if it had to be changed, I'd have no problem with Toussaint.

Yeah, I really don't care too much at this point, but Toussaint Circle would be fine with me.

Lee Circle is Lee Circle, period. Renaming things, streets, and places is pathetic.

I know everyone here will hate the idea, but it's actually not bad.

It celebrates a cultural icon for the city who had far more influence on the people who live there than Robert E. Lee did.

Dumb. Let's just rename the whole fricking city Jazz Land. New Orleans is much more than just black musicians. They have their HUGE place and rightfully so but come on.

Look at a map of the world from 100 years ago. Things are constantly changing and renaming is a part of that process.
