My office had a costume contest and cooked burgers/hot dogs/ gumbo for 100 employees. It was a lot of fun and got everyone from CEO to mechanics to loosen up for a few hours. I didn't dress up but didn't judge anyone else who did.

The people who just won $300, $200, and $100 for best costumes probably had fun...Cheese & meats, cake, and rum punch.

I did that for a Carlotta Street block party in 1999. Then was told by a nursing instructor that a real nurse never demeans herself by dressing up as slutty nurse for halloween. So after I became a nurse I made sure to pick other slutty costumes.
