People that put divider at grocery store conveyor belt wrong

Put it long ways to trip the sensor and keep distance. Its not a privacy fence

Does it not trip the sensor the wrong way? I’ve never seen this cause an issue, but I’ve also never been a grocery store cashier.

Why not just barely askew it to trip the lazer rather than taking up a 1/3 of the belt?
Pretty much all of them have endcaps these days anyway, the lazer is tripped
