Wondering what parents experiences are who've let their son (or daughter i guess) play pee wee football 5 and 6 age. Son's about to turn 6, hasn't played football yet. Really likes it. Loves to throw and catch football and baseball. He's got a good arm on him. Not a very thick kid, he's still maybe about 50 lbs. I'm thinking I need to test him this year while he's still in 5-6 age before he's the really young kid in the 7-8's on top of being probably on the lighter side.

Call if what you want but I will never let my son play football. There are too many other fun, energy-expelling sports out there that don't consist of running full speed into other kids

Strap some pads on and do big cat drill in the back yard. See what the boy is made of.

how physical is pee wee football? how much do they get after it or is it just a bunch of little kids hug humping each other to the ground?

Start teaching him the rules by watching a game or playing a video game.

It's 50 lb kids pushing each other. I think he'll be fine.

There are some kids at 7-8 that actually hit really hard. Less at 5-6 of course. Most of the kids are average at best.

What's a boy without broken bones and a concussion or 2?

I have a nephew who is 5 and plays flag football. That's the only type of football they offer in the area we are in.. But its a clusterfrick.

Why is it a clusterfrick? Because there is no type of organization. The coach from each team QBs (unless they run the ball, in that case they put a kid at QB to hand it off to the RB). I don't know how many kids each team has (some teams have more than others, which is probably due to kids not showing up for every game), but they put the whole teams on the field. On run plays the kids just run forward until someone grabs his flag. On pass plays, the kids rarely catch the ball, but when they do, its the same thing. They just run forward until flag is grabbed (when I say run forward, there isn't any type of blocking schemes so there is no concept of finding holes, etc).

If anything, you can tell what kids will be naturally athletic and which kids will not have an athletic bone in their body.

are the dangers in football really anything more than the dangers in baseball. Kids get beamed in the face all the time in baseball, much rather my kid taking his chances with full protective head gear and shoulder pads etc.

That's the problem.

But what you describe is common for this age groups. It's very very difficult to teach literally anything to those kids. Once they're 8 you can actually start teaching alignment and assignment.
