Who would be willing to pay upward of $500 for Payless shoes?

Hoodwinked social media influencers, that's who.

Payless, a brand known for budget-friendly shoes, opened a fake pop-up store called "Palessi
" in a Los Angeles mall and invited influencers to the grand opening. The store was stocked with Payless shoes in disguise.

quote:

"I would pay $400 or $500," a woman says in a TV ad, holding a pair of $19.99 sneakers. Another shopper calls the Payless shoes "elegant and sophisticated."

quote:

About 80 influencers attended over two nights, according to Payless. They shelled out a total of $3,000. One shopper spent $640 for a pair of boots, which represented an 1,800% markup. Payless, however, returned their money and let them keep the shoes. Payless said the influencers were paid a small stipend to attend.

I'm going to go out and buy a pair of Payless shoes just for this. What an awesome move. Also most Instagram influencers are so full of shite

ETA: Not a good week for thots between this and the Thot Audit.

The children in Asia almost had hope their wages were going to increase.

I really wish they would have kept the money. It's not like people paying more just to shop in a certain environment is unprecedented.

That's why I always laugh at the people who try to say they only buy (insert overpriced well known brand) because of the "quality". Just be honest, you bought it because of the status symbol of the brand. That's completely OK! Just don't try to sell me on some "quality" bullshite

I have a mont blanc pen I received as a gift. It writes essentially no better than a $.10 pilot pen. However, the ONLY reason I will wear in my shirt pocket is because of the "starcap" logo. It's a status symbol. Not a functional piece

You can do the exact same thing with everything...high end art is basically nothing but "influencer" driven. It works because humans are evolved to seek status.

More proof that people are willing to pay for a label or brand name over quality.

I really want to try to do this with art. Seems like it's the best product to swindle people with.

Just write "Picasso" in the corner of your kids 1st grade scribbling...someone will be fooled.

It's easy with Wine, too. No one actually knows wtf they're talking about with wine - it tastes good based on the label and how much they paid.

Wasn't there a story a few years back about a guy who was pissed that the "masterpiece" he bought was actually painted by the seller's 2-year-old son...or something like that?

Some wine snobs will probably lose their shite, but it's absolutely true.

In fact, the article in the OP even mentions it.

quote:

A study published in 2008 tested the idea that price affects perceptions of quality. Subjects were given inexpensive wine to drink, but those who were told it was more expensive described it as more flavorful and pleasant to drink.
