I received a parking ticket while attending a parade in New Orleans, and I want to know what TLOTOT think. I parked close to a curb, making sure my back bumper was (just) off the concrete corner of the block. (Between the red lines on the picture) I returned to my car to find a ticket for parking within 20ft of a crosswalk. Being sober when I parked (and when I left actually), I saw no crosswalk lines painted on the ground, and in fact, there's not even a sidewalk where I parked to walk'cross from.

After a little digging, I found an ordinance stating that I could not park within 20 ft of a crosswalk, as my ticket implied. So I says to myself, well, what is a crosswalk exactly? Because I've seen them before, and that didn't look like one to me. So in the N.O. book of fricking bullshite, I found this:

Crosswalk
means that part of a roadway at an intersection included within the connections of the lateral lines of the sidewalks on opposite sides of the highway measured from the curbs or, in the absence of curbs, from the edges of the traversable roadway; or any portion of a roadway at an intersection or elsewhere distinctly indicated for pedestrian crossings by lines or other markings on the surface.

So.... who's in the wrong?

You're going to lose regardless of the validity of your claims. Just pay and move on.

You were parked too close to the corner, your fault, ticket every time. You have NO CHANCE to win this. Pay up.

I parked for pelican games at same place for about 7 years now. For wrestle mania they towed my car and the next day put a brand new no parking sign up. The next week it was gone. Im guesskng they threw a sign up after they saw ui took pictures of the area and showed they were no signs i couldnt park there...even the nola cop agreed with us that parking always goes on there. ..nola fricks you for.more money during big events because they figure its out of towners who will just pay it

If this alone applies, then I would say you are wrong.

See how the sidewalk is sloped to allow for handicap access? There are your markings for pedestrian crossing.

Too close to the intersection. I would take the ticket and be glad I had a spot.

Let me break down the legalese for you:

quote:

Crosswalk means that part of a roadway at an intersection included within the connections of the lateral lines of the sidewalks on opposite sides of the highway measured from the curbs or, in the absence of curbs, from the edges of the traversable roadway; or any portion of a roadway at an intersection or elsewhere distinctly indicated for pedestrian crossings by lines or other markings on the surface.

The key word here is OR. So a crosswalk is any of these:

1) that part of a roadway at an intersection included within the connections of the lateral lines of the sidewalks, or on opposite sides of the highway measured from the curbs in the absence of curbs, from the edges of the traversable roadway, OR

2) any portion of a roadway at an intersection or

3) elsewhere distinctly indicated for pedestrian crossings by lines or other markings on the surface.

I'd say you don't meet #3, but you certainly meet #2 and #1. Remember, you don't have to meet all three for it be an intersection. Just one of them.

ETA: I find the defendant guilty.

How much was the ticket?

And LOL at there being a curb cut for HC access, but no actual sidewalks after said cut.

This statement you are whining about is clearly laying out guidelines for crosswalks not located at corners/intersections. You are 100% in the wrong based on that sentence you posted. Deal w/ it.

You didn't list the Ordinance number but if it is the one I recently looked up for a friend that got ticketed...

It basically prohibits any parking within a certain distance of a corner in the city of NOLA. The language in the Ordinance is VERY broad and, basically, if you are within that distance you are guilty. Pay it and move on.

BTW, be happy because my buddy got towed and had to pay those bullshite exorbitant fees on top of the ticket.

The way I interpret the part of the last paragraph which you highlighted is that it applies to other ("or elsewhere") crosswalks not at a comer but marked with lines.

IMO, the part that applies to you is that you were within 20 ft of the edge of the traversable roadway. The semicolon following that part separates that clause from the "any portion of a roadway" distinctly marked.

Sorry.
