OT step parent, but I'm against it for such a young age. Don't make a child dependent on a drug so early on that doesn't "need" it.

Only as a last option and even then. probably not....so overly prescribed

Nothing worse than seeing adults who cannot cope with life unless they have thier amphetamine fix.

I was against the meds, too, until my 4th-grader began to hate school because it was such a struggle to keep up. I knew she was ADD (she has other dx that would increase her chances anyway) but I thought it was a mild enough case that she needed to just tough it and grow out of it...but I was wrong.

I finally agreed to a low dose of Vyvanse for her at nine, and that shite worked almost instantly: She completed assignments. Homework time was cut in half - and she would do it without being told! Her grades came up and stayed there. She was happy, and actually enjoyed going to school.

I just hated myself for not doing it sooner and making her suffer needlessly.

...and Adderall is NOT the first thing the docs go for, don't worry.

See 3 doctors. Go with the majority. I , myself , would not start fricking up a childs brain at that young of an age. That's just me. With your description of your child , I don't think it sounds like he needs it. Try a tutor or something first.

Have your kid evaluated. It is expensive, but can really help you get an understanding of where he falls. My youngest son was really struggling with similar issues. He hated school. Twenty minute homework assignments took 4 hours.

We did the simple questionnaire with our doctor, and then did a more comprehensive examination with a psychiatrist. The diagnosis was ADHD, and stimulants were the best course of action.

It has resulted in a tremendous improvement.

Help me out a bit with your opinions...child - age 11 and in sixth grade, has been having trouble for a while with reading comprehension. Reads very well, easily pronounces difficult words, etc., but has difficulty putting into words (or on paper) what the meaning of the story is. Said child also has trouble with using tough vocabulary words in sentences. Said child is also not hyperactive.

My ex-wife - (said child's mom) is adamant that the kid needs meds used for treating ADD - like adderall, etc. I've expressed my concern for putting kids on medicine like that - and am mostly against it - except for when it's really needed. About a year ago our pediatrician said that our child is borderline ADD, but did not recommend medicine. The EX wants to go back to the Dr. for another opinion.

What say the OT about putting pre-teens on ADD type meds? Any parents out there deal with this before? Am I being to paranoid about these meds?

Dont put the kid on meds just because his reading comprehension is not that great.

I was put on ADD meds way too early and it fricked with me for awhile until i told my parents I wouldnt take it anymore and got my shite together.

ADD meds, in my opinion, are only needed when there is an obvious ADHD diagnosis. Not ADD. ADHD.
