Paging Napoleon - Water Heater Question

Rheem 41V50 water heater. Pilot lot sometimes goes out. It will not relight using control button but will light if I put a flame to it. Do you think the problem is the Burner/Pilot Light Assembly, Gas Control Valve, both or something else.
TIA

Pretty common for the cheap piezo lighter things to fail, and not provide a spark to light the pilot.
If you hold the button down, and the pilot will light, most likely the gas valve is doing what it's supposed to do.
If you can keep it pushed for a while, then let it up, and the pilot stays lit, the thermocouple is doing what it is supposed to do.
If the pilot stays lit, and you can turn the gas valve to the on position, where the big burner comes on, the gas valve and thermocouple are both ok.
Sounds like you have a draft of some kind blowing the pilot out, but the only thing wrong with the WH is the striker for the pilot to me.
Not an expert, but I have sold plumbing, including water heaters, for 20+ years.

I have thought this might be the problem. WH heater is in attic near pull down stairs. The two times it has happened the stairs were down for a while.
ETA: only thing it will not do is light with spark from water heater. Have to use a flame to re-light.

Kind of a PITA, but nothing to worry about. I think you can buy those striker things if it bothers you, but otherwise the WH is good to go. Just bring a match when it blows out.
