Oversold Flights: At what price offer will you take a later flight?

Oversold flights are common, usually airlines will offer $ to get you to take a later flight. Right now my flight to Providence is oversold and they were offering $1200 to take a flight 5 hours later. I would've taken it had I not had wedding shite to do up there today.
At what price do you take their offer?

Singapore Airlines stewardesses can be handy in this type of negotiation.

It depends on the length. I'd value my time at $250/hr. Two hour delay than I'd take $500. If it's five like yours $1250 would have done it.

Was offered $400 and didn't take it. Probably would have taken $1200

depends on the situation
I spent an extra night in vegas last year due to an oversold flight......I would have done that for free

The only time I have taken a later flight was the last time I flew AA. I was in MIA catching the last flight to SXM. AA offered a free upgrade to business class, lots of miles, free hotel room and 2 meal vouchers. So that is kinda where I set the bar.

Original offer was $800, they upped it to $1200 once no one bit. If they couldve gotten me on the 10am to boston, i wouldve taken it. Oh well, next time.

Price and a half of the ticket to net $500 or up.
Plus one perk regarding a later flight that doesn't expire.

really depends on the situation. if on a tight schedule for something important, it could be priceless.
otherwise, id be fine with pretty cheap but will be noting these answers for reference on when to jump in and max my payout!

They are usually airline credits.
The problem is, if you go up there and take them up on the offer, instead of going ahead and issuing the voucher, they will tell you to sit down until everyone else has boarded the flight.
If they still need volunteers after everyone has boarded, they will then give you the voucher. Many times they will have enough no-shows that they do not need volunteers, so they will just tell you to go ahead and board.
Of course by then, all of the overhead space is gone so you have to check your bag but if this is not an issue for you, then go for it.

somewhat of a tangent here, but can someone explain to me how in this era we live in it's even possible to overbook a flight? It seems liek with all the technology we have, after the last seat is booked you wouldn't be physically able to go in the system and book any more. How does this happen?

Just depends, usually the return is the only option for me. So if I have nothing going on at home and it is a 3-4 hour delay, I will take the 500-600 bucks and just hang out. I have only done it like three times.
For 1200, I would just be late to the wedding.
