Which is the problem plaguing law school and higher education in general. I graduated law school in 2005, and I have classmates that still have over $100,000 in student loans. I'm one of the fortunate ones, but I'm still not sure if I would do it again if given the chance.

Well I'm planning on attending LSU law school next fall. I'm going for basically free though so I have pretty much nothing to lose. I personally think the legal job market is heading in a good direction.
How are you basically "going for free"? Did you get a scholarship? What was your LSAT score? What was your undergrad degree in? Loyola threw money at me, but LSU didn't offer any. My undergrad degree gave me a great starting job for my career so law school was unnecessary.

I'm a Civil Engineer (PE). Is there any demand for patent law for us types, we don't usually invent stuff....

There is a demand, but not much in Louisiana. I'm sure there is a large demand for such in Houston.

I went to Undergrad for free and didn't use any of my college fund. It's all going to be used for law school. My grades are 3.2 with a 161 on the lsat.

Interesting, at 30 years old...it would be tough to leave my job and go back, but it would be nice to double my salary on day 1

LSU hands out quite a few scholarships that are over 75% of cost. But those have grade requirements as well usually top 25% or so

That's what I did. It's worth it at that point. Do well in class and get out with a 6 figure job and you'll have won the law school lottery.

Yep, I'm sure I could improve my LSAT considerably (156 after a week's worth of studying), but I only had a 3.0 in Construction Management in undergrad.

I would imagine that those numbers are probably in the ball park.
I see some folks mentioning bonuses but real bonuses rarely come into play for associates. The real issue that no one is mentioning is what generally happens to most of those associates killing it at the big firms?
They don't make partner and get kicked to the curb. The chances of making partner at a "big" firm are slim, but you can make a lot of money before getting booted and can usually land elsewhere with less pay.

If you could get the LSAT into the 160s they would throw money your way. 165 range and you'd get a ton to go to LSU

I came out of lurker status just to add . . .
I graduated from Southern, may have been on the cusp of top 1/3 of class(maybe not), and I am currently making bank (by Louisiana standards). Graduated more than 5 years ago but less than 10. A common issue that I see regularly is people with good cases and money to spend that can't find an attorney to accept the case. My experience in this field has not been all doom and gloom.
Okay, that was fun. Back to lurker status.

There are lots of loan repayment assistance programs (LRAPs) available through the federal government, state government, schools, etc. that can assist someone working in a public capacity.
