Our ancestors were douchebags,so why do we admire them?

They subjugated women, slaves, and erected societies of severe inequality where rulers and kings had everything, and everyone else had to barely scrap by. I am sick of the notion that our past brethren passed down valuable lessons to us. Whether it is minority rights or economic freedom, our present way of life is a big middle finger to the barbarians that lived from ancient Sumeria to early 20th century.

Our ancestors inherited slavery, etc and abolished them. While I have no doubt that you would have single-handedly destroyed the institution of slavery, in actual fact it was the work of lots of good thinking and brave acting on the part of many people you now casually deride.

There have been huge leaps in the fundamental nature of survival the last few centuries. We have the ability to look back with perspective on periods and events in time in which we can't place ourselves. Our ancestors made decisions which at the time were necessary for their well being and survival.
