OT's Guide to Fixing the Post-Secondary Budget Crisis

It truly is this simple.
#1 De-fund all public schools besides the flagship University in the state. (i.e. UT Austin, LSU, Uof Alabama, Uof Florida, etc.) (All remaining schools privatize or close it's that simple. This includes schools like LSUS, LSUE, etc. )
#2 Use the Texas top 10% model. This will ensure the state retains the top talent with competition becoming more fierce for admissions due to sheer numbers.
#3 Dramatically decrease the size and scope of humanities, social sciences, and liberal arts. While there is some utility in such programs, STEM should be prioritized and receive the bulk of the funding.
I know this is going to cause a lot of butthurt, but in the end it sucks to suck.

out of all the things the government wastes money on, education opportunities seems like the last thing we should go after
we always complain how dumb we are as a society now, and now you want to have less educated people?

Over the last 20 years, states have cut their contribution to higher education from as high as 70 percent on the dollar to 30 percent on the dollar
In 1994, students paid for 30 percent of their public education and states paid for 70 percent.
Today, the opposite is true: states pay 30 percent and the student pays for 70 percent. That difference has been absorbed by increased student debt.
They already have defunded it, they just don't want you to notice how.

taking higher education away from 90% of high school graduates sounds like a good idea?

Horrible. Just a horrible suggestion.

Wtf? Do you even know why a university exists?

See, this is why America isn't great anymore. We spend so much time trying to "educate" kids. How much money could be used to feed the poor and provide services to the needy with all this money we spend on pointless "education".
I learned all I ever needed to learn from TV anyway.

The fundamental flaw in your thinking is you equate college with education. There would not be less educated people. In fact there would be much more educated people with a higher quality of education in fields that matter such as STEM.
Just because people graduate from college does not make them "educated." Look at the general public. The majority at this point have a bachelor's degree.

I'm not talking about taking education away from anyone. I'm talking about the state only funding one University. All the private colleges and whatnot can do their thing.

No they don't.
quote:- per the us census.
In March 2011, for the first time ever, more than 30 percent of U.S. adults 25 and older had at least a bachelor's degree
Wikipedia claims the 2014 number is a massive 34%. Solid majority right there.
