OT Travelers- Italy, Austria, Germany

OK OT Travelers, I am going to be in Venice next week for meetings. Meetings end on Friday and will spend the weekend somewhere in Europe. I don't want to spend a lot of time traveling so I am thinking of places close to Venice. Is Innsbruck, Austria any good in the summer? I know it is primarily a ski town, but don't know what it is like in the summer months.

I'd recommend Munich, should be easy to get there by train, get a place in the city center and enjoy the beer gardens.

Lived in Innsbruck.
Gorgeous but not much to do. Good food, pretty mountains, and a casino, but its really really small. (and will have hundreds of college students running around drunk)
Go to Vienna, Prague, Munich, Rome, and Florence IMO
ETA:
Prague and Munich being my favorites. So much to do in both. (I know Prague is in Czech, but its my favorite city in the world)

Innsbruk is awesome in the summer. I definitely recommend it. It's a party place, generally with lots of young college students and picturesque mountains.

+1 I loved Munich.

There's lots to see near and in Venice.
Taking a long train ride to see someplace else seems counter-productive, if you only have a weekend to travel.
Thoughts?

I studied abroad a while back and took a bus between Venice and Vienna... it's an absolutely gorgeous drive in the summer time and, even though I only saw it out the bus window and couldn't stop, I'd recommend looking into Klagenfurt and Lake Worthersee. Huge long lake resort area. Just seeing it out the window left a mark on me!

If you want to see Florence/Firenze without really seeing much of it, because a weekend is not enough time, take an early train there.
Or rent a Fiat and see the small villages and countryside within a weekend's driving distance.
Train transportation in Italy is slower and less reliable than what you get in Germany, Austria, France and the UK, so, keep that in mind. Unless you take the express train, the train in Italy makes lots of stops at small towns.
There's probably an express train that runs between Venice and Florence/Firenze.

Are you single/alone and looking for nightlife?
Florence is nice with plenty to see and do, but it's probably more of a couples town (I went with my wife).
Prague, Innsbruck, Munich all would likely have more nightlife.

If you have only a weekend to travel from Venice, go to Slovenia. For the first half day (travel day) go to the capital city, Ljubljana. Then your next full day go to Lake Bled for day of hiking, whitewater rafting, and taking in the beautiful scenery with 3glav Adventures. Slovenia is beautiful, very cheap, and everyone there were very friendly. Also the train ride will be very short compared to Munich or Prague.
Other options would be Vienna (more museums, history, etc.) or for a longer train ride, Croatia. Known throughout the world for its beautiful beaches. Also could probably do some of the same stuff in Slovenia. This is secondhand info as I have never been to Croatia, but friends have.
Innsbruck is going to be full of American college students and I wouldn't want to step foot in Florence during this part of the summer as there will be a million tourists to go along with crazy heat.
Anyways have a great trip wherever you go and represent America well.

Florence is great. You're also not far from the Lakes district of northern Italy.
Ljubljana, Slovenia is cool or you could go to Portoroz, Slovenia which is a beach town. As stated earlier, Slovenia is cheap and the people are very friendly. Portoroz isn't far from Venice at all. From Portoroz you could even take a boat to Rovinj, Croatia which is one of the prettiest citys I've ever been in. All the options would be easy from Venice.

Slovenia / Croatia is a great option from Venice... I've never been but they are high on the list.

Innsbruck was very nice in the summer when we did it. Bopped around Europe for a month with Eurail and ended taking the train from Venice to Innsbruck because Switzerland was so damn expensive. We got a cheap hotel room at the base of the Olympic ski lift above the city. Very nice train ride over the mountains from Italy. Hiked a peak that had a restaurant/bar on top which was a good surprise. It's really nice around the old Olympic village and I'd recommend staying there. It's connected to downtown Innsbruck by rail. Good destination if you like crisp mountain air in the summer.
Munich is great as has been said but it's not in the mountains. Depends on which you want.

Porec, Croatia is some of the most fun I've ever had.
Was there for 3 days and spent like 9 dollars.
