Looking for advice from folks who have used both iPhone and GPS watch to track pace and distance while running. I've used the Nike Running app and my iPhone to track my runs and it appears to be fairly accurate. It also allows me to listen to spotify, which is a plus, but I'd prefer not to have to bring it on really long runs.

My question - are the Garmin watches that much more accurate for pace and distance? Which one do you prefer using? And how many of you are using it for heart rate monitoring?

I'm running a half in January and considering getting one of the Garmin Forerunners for Christmas.

I have a basic New Balance watch and it fits my needs just fine. I don't like running with anything so works. Only thing is that it sometimes takes a while to lock on or it loses signal

I have a fore runner and it works beautifully. The iPhone app is good as well but it gets annoying carrying a phone around on runs. (Also pur coach doesn't let us have them on runs.) The watch does everything without having to carry the phone.

I haven't fooled with the heart rate monitor but a teammate uses it regularly and it seems to work well for him.

I used to run with a nice garmin (4xx, forgot the exact number) 3 years ago and loved it, but i didn't have a nice smartphone at the time. I made the move to an iphone about 2 years ago and have used it since because my garmin battery died and I haven't replaced it. I feel like with my phone and the mapmyrun app that I'm not missing anything. I get pace and distance (although I do wish that I could set my pace intervals to 1/2 mile as opposed to 1 mile). I'm not training for a specific race so I don't need anything to do any more than my phone does.

ETA: You can sync most new heartrate monitors to the mapmyrun app

Used to use the Nike app and its pretty accurate. Got tired of wearing my phone, so I got the Nike watch. I think it's only $140. Pretty good watch considering the price. It's accurate as well. I've run in several races with it, so the mileage matches up as well as my buddies that use other watches including Garmin.
