I have a hard time disconnecting on the weekends and vacations. I check my phone frequently and respond to emails over the weekend. Heck, I'm usually the one instigating them. I'm almost always thinking about work and get worked up about work issues even when I'm not physically there.

I'm beginning to think I have a problem. So what better place to come than the omniscient OT.

this, I have an issue with myself However, I adhere to a no-email policy away from the office. Dont check them, dont read them, dont respond/send them

That just means you really really care which is a great thing and a sign of someone who either is or will be successful. Always do more than what is expected, and you will be a success. But, it's not really healthy for your mind. You'll need to find some balance in your life somehow by learning how to clear your mind from it sometimes. That'll help to keep you from burning out later on or getting sick.

It depends. Most of the time I can easily disconnect but if it's towards the end of a quarter and I have some big deals on the line then I stay connected.

Easiest way for me to disconnect is leave the phone inside and go outside and do something.

I learned the hard way that I have to leave work at work. Once I give shift report to the next nurse and clock out I don't worry about work until the next time I work.

We all have a problem. It's never more than a couple of hours for me. I think we all have a big problem with things likely getting worse - but completely a product of today's culture.

I feel like EVERYONE in the military is easily replaceable, so no, I don't have a hard time disconnecting. Once I leave work, I rarely think about it.

This is really good advice. I'm concerned about burnout. I've been going at this pace for most of my career and I'm beginning to get irritable and angry at my best people over innane and inconsequential things. I'm actually really looking forward to the football season. LSU football is about all that'll disconnect me from work.

I don't disconnect easily but I also deal with personal life at the office as well. As long as my firm operates no one complains.

I have good people who work for me. They can make many decisions for themselves and know I'll support them as long as their reasoning is good. If I'm away from work and they need to call me, it better be an important issue. I do leave my phone on all the time but I get an off-hour call very rarely (quarterly maybe).

I check email all the time but very little of it needs an immediate response.

Text messages are efficient. That's usually how I know of a problem.

When I was further down the food chain, I couldn't disconnect. It's nice being the king.

I have good people too. I've hired people way smarter than I am. And I used to trust them more. Of late, I've been getting into their business too much trying to manage with the details finding stupid things to ding them on. I'm annoying myself more than them actually. A lot of the crap I try to stay on top of after hours or weekends doesn't actually deserve my attention. It's weird and not my style.

Absolutely not.

Radio is constantly on, I respond to emails/texts/calls when I'm off. GF is even beginning to learn the codes

Being aware of it is a great start toward healing. I think you are absolutely right. Having something to help you disconnect, (sports, music instrument, art, reading) are all great choices toward getting your mind the rest it needs. Good Luck!

I imagine that's really hard for you, nurse. I worked in a hospital right out of college (in psych), and it weighed heavily on me. It's hard to shake some things.

Currently, I still have trouble disconnecting. I'm actually doing work right now. I do force myself to step away at least for a little while each day even if it's just for an hour or so.

I put my work email on my phone once. Took it off a week later.

Take your work stuff off your phone.
