I can't believe the number of kids I see in public watching video content on a tablet or phone and they're not using headphones with their parents sitting right next to them.
OT parents- do you teach your kids that it's polite to use use headphones when in public, or do you think it's okay to teach your child that being inconsiderate of the world around you is acceptable?

Never really thought of it as manners, I just encourage them to use them so I don't have to listen to their music, games, whatever.

I'd think good manners would be just not watching videos/listening to music in public.

Try putting headphones on a 2 yr old and get back to me

Mostly it's in the car or waiting at a doctor's office. They don't bring electronics into like a restaurant or church or places like that.

Bad for their ears and makes it harder to communicate with them. My child is too young for this, but I get it. I doubt it occurs to many people that the noise is that bothersome to someone in the area.
Where are you that the sound coming from a phone or tablet is the most annoying sound you hear? Church? Golf course? Do you teach adults to whisper to each other when they are around you so you don't have to hear their voices?

The adults that do this need to be addressed first.

Situations like this are only going to get worse.

I've only experienced this once, but I was at the post office and the mom was just letting the kid listen to some heavy arse rock music blaring for a solid 5 minutes before someone eventually spoke up.
I did find that to be pretty obnoxious, but this isn't some situation I run into often either

Airports and public transit are probably where I run into this the most. But this week my coworkers child came to work with her daughter (kids out of school for spring break), and was playing on a tablet watching video and playing games sans headphones or muting the device. The kid was somewhere between 8-10 years old. I can't imagine trying to get a toddler to keep headphones on for a sustained period of time, but I think a middle schooler is more than capable of understanding the concept of not disturbing others.

Same here, and in those environments, it's just not noticeable enough for me to give it much thought.

This is a different situation than I had in mind (4 year old at an airport). This is bullshite on the parent's part.

How about not letting your kids stare at a tablet or phone in public social settings?

As long as those parents teach them to not turn up the music too loud on those headphones. Deaf by 13 would suck.
