Looking for a mid size SUV for the wife, and she seems to like these. Just a quick glance on craigslist and these seem rather inexpensive for the mileage and year, so I'm naturally skeptical. I've googled around a bit and keep seeing that the 2017 is "improved" but without any details on what is so bad about the older models, like 2014-2016.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Every car manufacturer will say the current model is improved

I wouldn't trust it. Jeeps are generally great. But the units built off of FCA - Fiat undercarriages have had tons of issues.

For a cheap reliable used SUV that no one likes get a Ford Flex. If you want one to last and have value get a 4Runner.

I don't know his budget, but if I'm buying a used mid size SUV, I'm starting with those 3. I think there is good value available with each.

I bought a 2016 Jeep Compass for my wife last year
I drive it everyday now that she has a company car
It's not bad for a small SUV
I like it
Looks and drives like a smaller Grand Cherokee

The Compass is neither an SUV nor mid sized. It's a compact crossover.

Show her the Grand Cherokee or 4Runner.

I know someone that drove one from 2007 until about 6 months ago. Said it was super reliable. Just upgraded to the grand Cherokee.

He probably put 175k miles on it with no major issues.

In the case of the new Compass it's mostly true. It looks like a smaller Jeep Grand Cherokee and has better quality materials on the interior. The new one is also much more capable off road if you get the 4X4 version. The inside is a tad roomier w/more room for cargo than in the previous version (less than current CRV though) as well. Overall it's just a better designed vehicle w/better features and better build quality.

The only negative I can really think of is the lack of engine options in the US. The '17s will only have a 2.4-liter Tigershark inline-four which is fine for the most part but isn't really as powerful an engine as some might want.

They look like they'd be fun to drive on a light off road course but man those things are tiny. I've also heard that the road noise is a bit louder than most might like. I'd move up a size to the Cherokee if you were thinking of a smaller Jeep TBH. I drove a base model rental a while back and was surprised at how much I liked it. It kind of reminded me of an Outback w/more character.

Had a Compass as a rental in Colorado a couple of years ago. It seemed nice enough at first, but it was really loud and really struggled in the mountains there.
