OT Loungers: can I get an oil baw update?

I've got a nephew who is interested in going into petroleum engineering next year for college. Have things stabilized in the industry or gotten better/worse? Any advice to give the kid regarding the O&G industry?

I wouldn't worry about the current market if he's just starting. Chances are he will change majors anyway

We'll all be flying cars that run on trash in 2015 anyway.

Not yet, but if he is just starting undergrad and gets out in 4-5 years he could be in a hell of a position. A lot of companies are running lean right now. Assuming it picks up by then there will be plenty of jobs to be had.

absolutely true...
even if he doesn't, he has a couple of years worth of general stuff to take that can pretty much transfer to any major...

He might be ok, but I'd still suggest he find something more stable, like mechanical or chemical engineering

This. Tell him to stop googling "highest paying jobs requiring a bachelor's degree" and basing one of his biggest life decisions on that.

Do chemical engineer. More options, but can still work for O+G industry if it bounces back.

truck nuts are shriveled up right now. might be back swinging in a couple years.

Chemical or mechanical are much more flexible. PETE is tight now and not as flexible long term.

Two things for you to watch:
US production numbers
and
Chinese economy (and thus demand)
Production in the US is falling, but not substantially. China demand growth is expected to shrink.
I will say this: A petroleum engineering major is still better than 90% of the alternatives because there will never be that many because of difficulty. And, companies will need cheap (less experienced) engineers in the coming years. Plus, most workers getting laid off are non-skilled.

Make him go learn a trade before he gets that engineering degree. Even if he can't find a job with his degree, he'll still be able to find a job.

The world needs scaffolds.

No. It might be nice, and it might make his first few years seem like he knows what he's doing to the blue collar workers, UT it's time wasted in regards to growing his career as an engineer. That's not trying to make light of the experience factor, but that should be built into your training as an engineer anyway. No reason to work several years at 25 bucks an hour when you can learn the same thing at 50 bucks am hour. Now that doesn't give you a right to "know it all" right out of school, but there's absolutely no reason to not go straight into engineering. Not even a reason to take a trade type job over an engineering internship during a summer. There's a lot that "field/shop" people don't see in engineering just as engineers don't see some of the practical things.
To the OP, tell him to go mechanical. You can get a job in almost any industry.

Yep.
I'd say either mechanical or chemical would be a better option, but they aren't easy.
