First piece of advice is take a few lessons to get an idea of what you need to work on.

Secondly when you go to the range spend at least twice as much time working on chipping and putting as you do on your swing (this is the fastest way to shave strokes). If you can eliminate or minimize 3 putts that will have a huge impact on your scores.

This. Poor shots from 50 yds and in combined with the inability to lag putt are major stroke gainers for the high handicapper.

Also playing from the wrong set of tees seems to hurt a lot too.

Chipping and putting is where it's at

Inside 100 I'm probably a single digit cap, outside over 20. Averages out to mid 80's to low 100's depending on the day

Playing a shamble as a 13 off a guy's drives that were over 300 all day, I shot 62

If you go out and don't think of yourself as a pro, you can easily shoot in the 90s. Hell it's probably easier to just bring your 7 iron and a putter, put pride aside, and hit fairways.

There's people who could break 100 with just those 2. People who can't do it with 14 clubs are not those people

Learned to play around 9-10 and didn't take terribly long..played from the ladies tees at that age.. Probably a couple months of playing and practicing near daily during summer.. Broke 90 at 13 from mens tees and 80 at 14. It's all about finding a repeatable swing where you know where it's going to go.. The first goal was to be consistentlyaround the green in 2 on par 4's. You'll break 100 quickly when that occurs

Drive for show, putt for dough.

Put real effort into the putter and that will make a huge difference on the scorecard.

Also, track your scores including putts and penalty shots on oobgolf.com or thegrint.com. You'll realize how shitty those out of bounds shots and water balls are. You'll get a handicap too.

Read The 5 Fundamentals of Golf by Ben Hogan. Spend a good bit of time practicing. Next time you play you will break 100.
