Installing a new bilge pump in a boat. I need to splice ring terminals to the wires so I can attach to battery. The wires from the pump are 18 gauge I believe. The only ring connectors I can find at home depot/lowes that are large enough to fit the wider terminal post look like they're for giant cables not wires

How/where do I find ring connectors that are big enough to fit on the wider terminal (and smaller one for that matter) but are suitable for that size wire?

PS - here's the pump:

Go to a NAPA/AutoZone type place. They probably have more selection for attaching to a car/truck/boat type battery.

Cut a short length of larger cable and strip the insulation off. Use the strands to take up the space in the connector. Find a can of Scotchcote. It's a thick waterproofing goo that you apply with the brush under the lid. Go from the insulation on the ring connector all the way to the insulation on the wire. Make sure the only bare metal is the part of the ring connector that goes on the battery. Use corrosion block on the terminal.

Ill try that. Trying to avoid West Marine, they'll want $10 per connector probably.

Check auto parts stores or order online. You can also cut enough off of the circle part of the connector to jam it in there. Another option is to get one of these from an auto parts store

I was in Home Depot a few years back picking up a few items I needed for some home repairs and I also needed a quart of motor oil. I thought that they just might have that in HD so I asked one of the wonderful Walmart graduates who worked there where I might find it. He replied: "This is Home Depot. What part of your home needs motor oil?"

Go to a boat dealership. They will have some for sale inside.

Where does the wire attach to that?

I think the only thing they carry is for mixing with gas. And probably chainsaw bar lubricant.

So would that be ok in a marine/saltwater type application?

Those terminals are exactly what you're looking for. All you have to do is strip the wires and crimp the connections on. You can get them at any auto parts store

Crimp what connections? Wouldn't I just strip the wire and wrap around under the wing nut?

That's the ghetto way of doing it. The correct way is to use heat shrink ring connectors. Those will be at the auto parts store also. IIRC, 18-22 AWG is the usual size they have there. Just make sure to get one big enough to fit over that stud

Question, why is this going directly to a battery and not to a terminal strip?

Yea I prefer to use the waterproof ring connectors, hence my original problem.

Give me your boat run down.

Size?
Use?
# of batteries?

Bilge pump is pretty important piece of equipment. BTW, wing nuts should never be used in a boat, the lose connection under vibration. Always use lock nuts.

I believe at that time, you are correct. However, I was in HD a couple weeks ago and I saw regular motor oil on a shelf.

Not to hi-jack this thread, but I have learned not to ask for help from an HD employee. They know nothing.
