OT Electricians: Need some suggestions

Two weeks ago, I come home and the bedroom area of my house has no power. I go out to the breaker box and none of the breakers are thrown. I turn the breaker for that area off and on and the power is restored. The breaker is loose - it moves when I turn it off an on.
Last night, I wake up and no power in the bedroom area. There was no load in that area. Same thing - breaker is in the "on" position and when I turn it off, then back on, the power is restored.
Bad breaker? Loose wiring?

both? your breaker should be tripping so it sounds like its bad.
but more concerning is WHY it keeps tripping. you may want to go around & check the outlets and light switches to make sure nothing is shorting out. could be a potentially dangerous situation. i'd get a professional out.

Breakers are cheap, I'd start there. Also, look in your panel for a faulty ground.

How much do you value not waking up engulfed in flames?

If your house was constructed in the past 15 or so years, it was required to have arc fault breakers for all bedrooms. Those breakers have a second reset button on them. Usually it is a red or green square push button. Those are also a lot more sensitive to shorts, etc. Try resetting the button and see if that helps. Otherwise, the breaker needs replacing.

the legs on the back of the breaker are bent. Easy fix. Turn off the main power, pull the breaker out and remove the wire. Replace with a new one

Most likely both of these.

Check to see if any receptacles or switches on that circuit are back stabbed. Sometimes when a large load exists on a circuit, the back stabs can get weak and heat and thusly expand. Possibly causing the breaker to trip. Find the fault that caused the breaker to get loose. It can close back once the load is off.

quote:I suspect that you have an issue with the breaker. Particularly since it's killing the circuit without actually tripping the switch. More than likely there's nothing wrong with the circuit it's protecting. Just an internal malfunction.
I turn the breaker for that area off and on and the power is restored
quote:This is concerning, however. Are the rest of the breakers in the panel just as loose? Some panels are obviously of higher quality than others. However is a breaker becomes loose in its slot, it can become hot if it isn't making good contact with the bus. This would definitely cause a breaker to malfunction.
The breaker is loose - it moves when I turn it off an on.

Replace the breaker. Its probably loose, and the force of you turning it off and back on is re-establishing contact with the bus.

Even new breakers go bad. I had a 6 month old one crap out on me. Spend the $10 and put a new one in
