Friend of mine's story:

1. Got DUI over 6 years ago
2. Never hired a lawyer
3. Never got the breathing thing installed in vehicle

What does this person need to do to obtain a license and auto insurance?

You should get a lawyer to help you get your drivers license back.

I hope he has 10-15K on hand to get it done.

Something is off. A person with a DUI 1, or even a 2, should have the license back in a much shorter period of time.

Six years is a long time.

So he basically has to start back from day one?

It was his first time DUI. He's never had the money to hire a lawyer, etc. He owns a car and has been driving without a license and insurance for 6 years.

I'm just trying to help. He's much more responsible now than he was in his late 20's.

Did he not do what the judge asked?
If so there is probably a warrant out for him.

Assuming it was not a felony DUI (3 or 4 +) it should not take anywhere near that much to fix the license issue.

I know of a man who decided, twenty years ago, that he was not going to put the breathing apparatus in his car. So, he just didn't drive. He also quit drinking. But, when he went to get his license, the DMV still insisted that he have the machine installed in his car. Their position was that you do not have the option to simply quit driving in lieu of having he breath tester in your car for the designated period of time.

Thanks for a decent answer. This person simply didn't show up for court and forfeited his license. Now, he's older and wants to get it all straightened out. He's trying to avoid having the embarrassing machine in his vehicle.

License was probably only suspended for 6 months to a year. He just needs to go to the DMV and get it reinstated, will cost about $500. NO need to hire a lawyer.

From experience your buddy probably has a warrant out for his arrest. I would go to the courthouse and see what his options are. He will probably at the least need to do whatever he was supposed to do 6 years ago.
