OT Detectives: how do you run a license plate?

My friend had some things stolen from her, but someone got the plate number of the car. I have never been in this situation, so I don't know how to help.

If it was drugs stolen, call a private detective.

If it was something else, call the cops and file a report so insurance will cover it.

what exactly are you going to do once you figure out who the car owner is? Are you going to confront them? I mean, shouldnt you just call the cops? Are you going to go get her drugs, er, property back for her?

If you know someone with LexisNexis, they might have access to the public records database.

Once upon a time if you had a buddy that was a cop or deputy they could run it, now anytime a search of a database is run it is logged to the user, so it has pretty much become official business only.

I found a tag in the street in front of my house. I called the tag office and told them about finding the tag and that I thought it belonged to one of my neighbors. Told them the tag # and they gave me a name and address.
