Do you think it's worth discussing with the dentist? I've talked with the hygenist go told me that it is what it is more or less.

Go to another Dentist and make sure they aren't crooks. When I was a kid, we moved to a new town, got a new dentist and voila, cavities errwhir. My mom got me out of the dentist chair after he finished filling the second cavity, (about to start the third). She got me in to see another dentist a few days later, no cavities.

I bet if you go to 3 dentist in 3 days you get 3 different lists of work you need.

OT Dentists - Over-diagnosing cavities

Change Dentists to any remotely associated person in the medical/dental/auto/home/lawn & garden field and yes everyone over diagnoses.

How does one distinguish a corporate from private?

1) Check online for many locations with the same practice name. Aspen, Greenberg, Coast, etc.
2) Ask the office

There are really good dentists at some corporate practices. The new trend for new graduates is to work for a corporate practice. They are growing like weeds. The benefits to the dentists are that they don't have to own and fund the practice and can get their student loans paid off. They still have to follow standards of care so over treating is still unethical and illegal. However, the amounts are so small that no lawyer is going to pursue them. That's true for private practices too. This is the issue with crook dentists. There's really no repercussions and most patients don't know if they are being scammed or not. Each State has a department to take complaints about dentists but most folks don't know that.

If you file a complaint, the dentist has to respond to the State with information that they won't want to share if they did anything unethical.

More patients should do this. Alas, they treat their dentist like an all knowing entity that is as honest as the day is long. That is changing somewhat but it's really slow.

Using a network dentist helps because the company can audit the dentist's records to ensure no fraud is occurring. Dentists hate that too but they shouldn't if they are honest.

Who sees an out of network doctor? Almost no one. Who sees an out of network dentist? Many. The ADA and dentists have done a good job claiming that insurance companies are the devil. What they don't tell you is that most can't afford their services without insurance.

See a network dentist.

Went to a new dentist after I moved and in the first visit he said I had 5 cavities. This after years of no issues minus one or two. Well two of the ones he fixed had to be redone. One of the reworked teeth just got crowned due to a crack. I can't help but wonder why it cracked and why my teeth hurt way more than ever after that damn dentist worked on them. I believe they can make this shite up whenever they want.

Those who say a root canal is unnecessary have never "really" needed a root canal. I begged an endo to see me on a Friday once. I offered to wash his car and clean his house I was hurting so bad.

Any opinions on over diagnosing cavities?

My ex was a dentist. She said it just depends on how conservative a dentist is. She's on the more conservative end, so she'll tend to fill more IF the patient tends to use different dentists. If the patient is established and she can monitor the area over time, she is less likely to fill.

Some dentists are just awful. It's like any profession, except in dentistry you can be at the top of your class and still be a bad dentist. Hand skills are super important. Pro tip: usually the friendlier dentists who will sit around and chat you up are usually the worst

You sound knowledgeable on the topic and my want (using a Les Miles-ism) is to believe you, but I suspect your knowledge is tainted with incentive. You sound like an insurance company man, am I right?

BTW, I too have experienced exactly what is being discussed. The "out-of-network" dentist rooked me bad.

I like him. I respect him. But he doesn't see what we do. He knows his colleagues are going after bigger money today. And that's fine. They can choose to do that. We can also choose to go elsewhere. But those old school, only do necessary stuff, dentists are getting harder to find

I'd rather pay extra to go to a private practice than go to a corporate run place.

I was mostly kidding. Although the comment earlier in thread about friendly dentist who sit around and talk are the worst, kinda has me nervous All my dentist does is talk LSU football.

For what its worth (which aint much) I was told that I had 2 cavities that needed filling when I was 18. I moved residence and started seeing a different dentist. The new guy said I had no cavities. This happened in the late 90s and I still have not had a cavity (subtle brag).

Moral: you should get you some "self healing" teeth like me because there is no way that dentist lied to me:)

srsly though, I think many times that shadows on the Xrays cause cavities to be over diagnosed. At least, I had one dentist tell me that such was the case.
