Friend asked me this and I don't know. Help appreciated.
His 16 year old daughter (no pics you pedos) wrecks her POS first car into a (of course) brand new Lexus. 16 year olds fault.
The Lexus will obviously be getting repaired but the question is this:
His car is a beater that he can probably patch up on his own. Will not claiming repairs on his car help when it comes time to renew his insurance? He expects a rate bump but wants to minimize it obviously.

I wouldn't think it would matter. The fact is that there is an accident on record. Amount of damage isn't all that important, if I'm not mistaken.

Completely arbitrary. He's going to take a big hit for the Lexus. He's probably better off claiming it since he'll be getting butt-raped for the next 8 years regardless.

It doesn't matter.. Incident has been recorded it's on her record regardless of how her car gets fixed or not

His real problem is that he is personally liable for her torts until she is 18. I hope he has some high limits.
eg. Lexus totalled, he has $15K PD limits: he is personally liable for the rest.

I lose all sympathy for him for giving a 16 year old a brand new Lexus

I don't know why people with bad reading comprehension amaze you. It's not hard to read something wrong.

At fault accident with a 16 yr old driver he can expect a hefty rate bump, Not claiming the repairs might save him a little but I doubt it

But to answer the question, I'm an agent and it all depends on his deductible. If he's got a $1,000 deductible, and he can get it fixed for less than that, then get it fixed. If it'll cost more, then file the claim and have the insurance take care of it.

Whether he patches up the beater or not will not really matter from a rate increase standpoint. The threshold for most insurance companies to validate a rate increase, as approved by the Dept of Insurance, for an incident is $ 750 paid, regardless of where it is paid.

Five years ago my wife's insurance was over 600$ per month on a sub 20k car.
With no accidents for her in the last 3 years, both of ours is under 240$ per month.
It doesn't take as long to disappear as people say. The rate hit won't be more than 30 or 40 bucks a month most likely.
Edit... Had water on the screen and it didnt take the zeroes.

It doesn't matter what he does - as long as an at-fault claim is made on his policy (16yo daughter), it's done. There will be a rate increase or possibly a cancellation (cancellation only if it's a shitty low-priced company). Unless he has an accident forgiveness provision on his policy.
He can't do anything to minimize the increase.
