OT car board: Used car - do you have your mechanic look at it before purchase?

Found a car we like, low mileage (31k), but it has less than a year on the original manufacturers warranty (powertrain only). I want to get a pre-purchase inspection by my mechanic to cover my bases, the wife thinks it's a waste of $120. FTR, there's a lemon law in NYS/NYC if things go badly and a dealership implied warranty that comes post purchase, but in my experience it's best to not have to deal with those unless you have no other choice.

What says the OT?

My son moved to Alaska and had spent a few hundred on a few cars for pre-inspection- couldn't find one with out problems. Purchased a used grand Cherokee and you guessed it - no inspection- blew $1500 about a week later.

It is if the car is in perfect shape, Money well spent if its crap. If it's somewhere in between, also well spent to give you another tool for your decision about buying it and at what price.

Like insurance it's only worth it financially if you need it but it is worth the peace of mind IMO. The only caveat is if you have an established trust relationship with the dealer/salesman.

Implied warranties are a nebulous thing unless you mean an extended warranty. Extended warranties are really more for peace of mind IMO.

"2012 VW Jetta"

nice cars, but at one time, I believe VW was having issues with their ignition coils. do not know if they got the problem fixed or not. I do know that replacement parts were scarce, as are VW dealers.
